1986 Wimbledon Championships – Women's Singles
Four-time defending champion Martina Navratilova defeated Hana Mandlíková in the final, 7–6(7–1), 6–3 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1986 Wimbledon Championships. It was her seventh Wimbledon singles title and 14th major singles title overall. Mandlíková was attempting to complete the career Grand Slam. This marked the first Wimbledon appearance of future champion Jana Novotná. She was defeated by Susan Mascarin in the first round. Martina Navratilova ( cs, Martina Navrátilová ; ; born October 18, 1956) is a Czech–American, former professional tennis player. Widely considered among the greatest tennis players of all time, Navratilova won 18 major singles titles, 31 major women's doubles titles, and 10 major mixed doubles titles, for a combined total of 59 major titles, the most in the Open Era. Wendy Turnbull, , (born 26 November 1952) is a retired tennis player from Australia. During her career, she won nine Grand Slam titles, four of them in women's doubles and five of them in mixed doubles. She also was a three-time Grand Slam runner-up in singles and won 11 singles titles and 55 doubles titles. Career Turnbull turned professional in 1975. Anne White (born September 28, 1961) is an American former professional tennis player from Charleston, West Virginia. She is most famous for wearing a white body suit at Wimbledon in 1985. Sara Louise Gomer (born 13 May 1964) is a retired tennis player from Great Britain. A left-hander, she competed for Britain at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Kristin Kinney McDonald (born August 27, 1959) is an American former professional tennis player. Biography Kinney grew up in Connecticut and attended Princeton University before turning professional. Sally Reeves (born 8 July 1964) is a British former professional tennis player. Following marriage she is now known as Sally Taylor. Jane Forman (born January 21, 1962) is an American former professional tennis player. She was born in Providence, in Rhode Island. Forman played college tennis with Clemson University in the early 1980s. She was a three-time singles All-American for Clemson, and she was named ACC Player of the Year twice. Bettina Bunge (born 13 June 1963) is a retired German tennis player. Born in Adliswil, Switzerland, she was part of a large group of successful German players in the 1980s, which also included Steffi Graf, Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, Sylvia Hanika, and Eva Pfaff. Ronni Reis (sometimes spelled Ronnie Reis; also Ronni Reis-Bernstein) (born May 10, 1966) is an American former tennis player. Reis won three gold medals at the 1985 Maccabiah Games in Israel, the doubles bronze medal at the 1986 Goodwill Games, and the doubles gold medal at the 1987 Pan American Games.
