1986 New Zealand National Soccer League
The 1986 New Zealand National Soccer League was the 17th season of a nationwide round-robin club competition in New Zealand football. Mount Wellington finished as champions, one point ahead of Miramar Rangers. Promotion and relegation Napier City Rovers finished last in the 1985 league, and took part in a play-off with the winners of the northern, central, and southern leagues ( Takapuna City, Manawatu United, and Rangers respectively). Palmerston North-based Manawatu United were promoted to the league, their first appearance in the top flight since 1979 There was to be no relegation at the end of the 1986 season, as it was decided to increase the size of the league to 14 teams. Auckland University were ejected from the league at the end of the season for failing to meet NZFA criteria, and three teams were promoted from the regional leagues. Christchurch United
Christchurch United is an amateur association football club in Christchurch, New Zealand. They compete in various Mainland Football competitions at Junior and Senior level. The club has won six National League titles and six Chatham Cup trophies. Christchurch United are the current Southern League champions. 1986 Chatham Cup
The 1986 Chatham Cup was the 59th annual nationwide knockout football competition in New Zealand. Up to the last 16 of the competition, the cup was run in three regions (northern, central, and southern). In a change to previous years, National League teams received a bye until Round Three (the final 64 stage) of the competition, one round earlier than previously. In all, 143 teams took part in the competition. Note: Different sources give different numberings for the rounds of the competition: some start round one with the beginning of the regional qualifications; others start numbering from the first national knock-out stage. Oceania Cup Winners Cup was one of the two main Oceania tournaments for clubs, the other one is Oceania Champions League. The 1987 Oceania Club Championship (known as the Qantas Pacific Champions' Cup at the time) was held in March 1987 in Adelaide, Australia. Teams A total of 9 teams from 9 OFC member associations enter the competition. *The highest ranked association (Australia) was awarded one berth directly into the final. *The second highest ranked association (New Zealand) was awarded one berth into the semi final. *The third highest ranked association (Fiji) was awarded one berth into the qualifying tournament semi final. *The remaining six associations (New Caledonia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Vanuatu) are awarded one berth each in the qualifying tournament. They will compete in Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 1 with newly appointed head coach Marty Rodwell History Manurewa AFC was formed by the merger of Tramways (1929 Chatham Cup winner) and another club named Manurewa. The merged entity initially used the portmanteau name of Tramurewa, during which time the club won the 1931 Chatham Cup. Tramuwera reverted to the name of Manurewa in 1959, the name currently used by the club. Red Sox Manawatu is an Association football and netball club in Palmerston North, New Zealand. The club caters for men's, women's and youth football teams and women's netball teams. Riverside RedSox is affiliated to Red Sox Manawatu and caters for junior boys and girls football. History The Red Sox Manawatu history is a complicated one. The club having been formed by the gradual merger and name-changes of a multitude of teams from the Palmerston North area. Papatoetoe AFC is an amateur football club based in Papatoetoe, New Zealand. They currently compete in the NRF Championship, however, have enjoyed successful spells at the top of the New Zealand game, namely in the former National League, and having won two NRFL Premier League crowns. History Papatoetoe AFC was founded in 1959 through the efforts of Ken Hastings. The club entered the new Franklin & Districts competitions in 1960, competing from a site at the Papatoetoe Recreation Ground on Great South Road. Gisborne City AFC
Gisborne City AFC was an association football club in Gisborne, New Zealand. Founded in 1939 as Eastern Union, the club changed its name to Gisborne City after winning the Central Districts League at the first attempt in 1967. As Eastern Union, the club had competed in the Chatham Cup since the early 1950s, and reached the semi-final (and North Island Final) in 1957, losing to eventual champions Seatoun 3–1. Gisborne set the New Zealand record for the most players from one club to be chosen for the New Zealand national football team to compete at a FIFA World Cup. Five players were selected to participate in the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. Miramar Rangers AFC
Miramar Rangers AFC is an amateur New Zealand association football club in the Wellington suburb of Miramar. The club is one of the most successful in New Zealand having won the Chatham Cup four times and the National League title twice. Over the last decade the club has played in the Central League and has won the division seven times, most recently in 2020. In 2004 it became one of the founding principal clubs of the Team Wellington franchise in the ASB Premiership.
