The 1986 Associate Members' Cup Final, known as the Freight Rover Trophy for sponsorship reasons, was the 3rd final of the domestic association football, football cup competition for teams from the Football League Third Division, Third Division and Football League Fourth Division, Fourth Division. 1985–86 Associate Members' Cup
The 1985–86 Associate Members' Cup, known as the 1985–86 Freight Rover Trophy, was the fifth staging of a secondary football league tournament, and the third staging of the Associate Members' Cup, a knock-out competition for English football clubs in the Football League Third Division, Third Division and the Football League Fourth Division, Fourth Division. The winners were Bristol City F.C., Bristol City and the runners-up were Bolton Wanderers F.C., Bolton Wanderers. The competition began on 14 January 1986 and ended with the final on 24 May 1986 at Wembley Stadium (1923), Wembley Stadium. In the first round, there were two sections split into eight groups: North and South. In the following rounds each section gradually eliminates teams in knock-out fashion until each has a winning finalist. Keith Curle
Keith Curle (born 14 November 1963) is an English football manager and former professional player, who was most recently the manager of National League side Hartlepool United. He played as a centre back from 1981 to 2005, notably in the Premier League for Manchester City, where he was also the club captain. He also played for Bristol Rovers, Torquay United, Bristol City, Reading, Wimbledon, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sheffield United, Barnsley. He was capped three times by England and received four caps at B Team level. He became player-manager of Mansfield Town in 2002, where he remained until 2005. Mark Raymond Came (born 14 September 1961) is an English former professional footballer who made more than 300 Football League appearances for Bolton Wanderers, Chester City and Exeter City. Dave Sutton (footballer, Born 1957)
David William Sutton (born 21 January 1957) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League for Plymouth Argyle, Reading, Huddersfield Town, Bolton Wanderers and Rochdale. He later became a manager. Despite being born in Tarleton near Preston in Lancashire Sutton began as an apprentice with Plymouth Argyle. He made 61 appearances at centre half plus 9 on loan at Reading before a transfer to Huddersfield Town under Mick Buxton in 1978. This was a highly successful move as Sutton moved up with them from the Fourth Division to the top half of the Second in the early 1980s. Jimmy Phillips (footballer Born 1966)
James Neil Phillips (born 8 February 1966) is an English football coach and former professional footballer. As a player, he was a defender who notably played in the Premier League for Middlesbrough and Bolton Wanderers. He also played in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers and in the Football League with Oxford United. Whilst at Bolton he played in the 1995 Football League Cup Final. Following retirement, he returned and has coached their reserve and academy teams as well as holding the position of first team caretaker manager on three occasions. Simon Farnworth
Simon Farnworth (born 28 October 1963) is an English former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He played for Bolton Wanderers, Bury, Preston North End and Wigan Athletic, and made over 500 appearances during his career. Simon retired from playing in 1996, and joined the backroom staff at Wigan as a physiotherapist. He then joined Liverpool, where he worked for eleven years as the head physio at Liverpool's academy. In 2009, he joined Morecambe and was appointed as the first-team physio. He left Morecambe in 2022. Terry Cooper (footballer, Born 1944)
Terence Cooper (12 July 1944 – 31 July 2021) was an English football player and manager. He was a left back in the Leeds United team of the 1960s and 1970s, and featured for England at the 1970 Mexico World Cup. He later went on to manage both of Bristol's football teams, Birmingham City and was twice manager of Exeter City. Early career Cooper was born in Brotherton, West Riding of Yorkshire. He was not discovered as a young player in the conventional manner – he simply turned up at Leeds United one day with his football boots in a paper bag, asking for a trial. He was granted his wish and impressed enough to be offered an apprentice contract.
