1985–86 Newcastle United F.C. Season
In the 1985-86 football season, Newcastle United F.C. participated in the Football League First Division. After their promotion two years previously, Newcastle aimed to consolidate their position in the top league of English football. Manager Jack Charlton resigned six days before the start of the season, leading to the appointment of Willie McFaul. The club finished 11th and performed disappointingly in the cups, losing out to Brighton and Hove Albion and Oxford United. Paul Stephenson made his debut in a 2-1 victory over Southampton in December 1985 and soon became a first team regular. Paul Stephenson (footballer)
Paul Stephenson (born 2 January 1968) is an English former professional footballer who played as a winger or a central midfielder for Newcastle United, Millwall, Gillingham, Brentford and York City before he ended his career with Hartlepool United. During his footballing career he made a combined total of over 500 appearances. He is currently assistant manager at Kilmarnock. Playing career Newcastle United Paul Stephenson was born in Wallsend. He started his career as an apprentice at Newcastle United in the same youth team that brought through the likes of Paul Gascoigne. He was by capped by England at youth level in 1986. Neil McDonald (footballer)
Neil Raymond McDonald (born 2 November 1965) is a football manager, coach and former player, in the right back and midfield positions. He is currently assistant manager of Barrow. During his career he played for the England under 21 team. As a manager, he has been in charge at Carlisle United and Östersunds FK. On 18 December 2008 he was appointed Assistant Manager of Blackburn Rovers, and was sacked on 13 December 2010 along with manager Sam Allardyce. On 1 June 2011, Allardyce announced McDonald as his assistant manager at West Ham United. On 2 June 2015, McDonald was appointed as manager of Blackpool on a rolling one-year contract, leaving the post on 18 May 2016. Rob McKinnon
Robert McKinnon (born 31 July 1966) is a Scottish former footballer, who played at both professional and international levels as a left back. Active in Scotland, England, and the Netherlands, McKinnon made over 500 League appearances in a career which lasted from 1985 to 2002. Career Early years in England Born in Glasgow, McKinnon played youth football in East Kilbride where his father coached a team. He began his career playing Junior football with Rutherglen Glencairn before turning professional in 1985 with Newcastle United; however he only played one league game for the ''Magpies'', a heavy defeat to Tottenham in which he was replaced by Paul Gascoigne (whose career was also in its infancy). Chris Hedworth
Christopher Hedworth (born 5 January 1964) is an English retired football centre-half. During a career of ten years in the 1980s and 1990s, Hedworth played for various clubs in the north of England as a slender centre-half. His reputation at Barnsley for shakiness and error-proneness led to him being something of a cult hero at the Yorkshire club, and he is renowned as one of a trio of goalkeepers fielded by Newcastle in a match in 1986. Hedworth started as an apprentice at Newcastle, signing professional terms in 1982. His debut came in October of that year, a 1–3 loss at Leeds United. Peter Haddock
Peter Murray Haddock (born 9 December 1961) is an English former footballer who played in the Football League as a centre back or right back for Newcastle United, Burnley and Leeds United. Haddock was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, and joined his home-town club as an apprentice in 1978, turning professional the following year. He made his debut in the Football League on 5 September 1981 in a 3–0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers in the Second Division. He played in a calm and collected manner and got a good run in the side during 1981–82 but lost his place halfway through the following season following the arrival of Glenn Roeder and Jeff Clarke. He remained at the club, playing only infrequently, and had a spell on loan at Burnley, before leaving for Leeds United in July 1986 for a fee of £45,000. John Anderson (Irish Footballer)
John Christopher Patrick Anderson (born 7 November 1959) is a former professional footballer who played as a defender. He represented the Republic of Ireland, and played for club sides West Bromwich Albion, Preston North End and Newcastle United. Club career Anderson was on the books of West Bromwich Albion between 1976 and 1979. Despite playing in 92 reserve team games for the club, he never made a single first team appearance for the club in a major competition. Anderson signed for Newcastle United in 1982 on a free transfer from Preston North End. His signing was low key because the club had recently pulled off a major coup in signing England captain Kevin Keegan. Jeff Clarke (English Footballer)
Jeffrey Derek Clarke (born 18 January 1954 in Hemsworth, England) is an English former footballer who is currently head academy physiotherapist at Scottish Premiership club Dundee United. He played as a defender, primarily for Sunderland and Newcastle United. He has been at Dundee United since November 2003, mainly as physiotherapist for the first team. Gary Alexander Kelly (born 3 August 1966) is an Irish former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He is the son of former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Alan Kelly Sr. Early career Kelly was born in Fulwood, Lancashire. Kelly began his career as an apprentice with Arthur Cox's Newcastle United in 1982, becoming boot boy to former England captain and European Footballer of the Year Kevin Keegan. David McKellar
David Norwood McKellar (born 22 May 1956) is a Scottish retired professional footballer, best remembered for his time as a goalkeeper in the Football League with Carlisle United, for whom he made 160 appearances for the club over two spells. In a long career, he played in all four divisions of the English league pyramid and the top three divisions in Scotland. McKellar later managed in Scottish junior and amateur football. Martin Richard Thomas (born 28 November 1959) is a former footballer who made more than 500 appearances in the Football League as a goalkeeper and represented Wales at senior international level. After retiring as a player he became a coach, and has worked for various clubs and for the English Football Association. Playing career Born in Senghenydd, Glamorgan, Thomas moved to England to join Bristol Rovers as a youth player.
