1985–86 Cleveland State Vikings Men's Basketball Team
The 1985–86 Cleveland State Vikings men's basketball team represented Cleveland State University in the 1985–86 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by third-year head coach Kevin Mackey. In 1984–85, the Vikings finished 21–8 (11–3 in the AMCU-8). It was the 55th season of Cleveland State basketball. Regular season Cleveland State finished the regular season with a 24–3 record and 13–1 in the AMCU-8. That record earned them a #1 seed in the AMCU-8 postseason tournament. They defeated Northern Iowa, Illinois-Chicago, and Eastern Illinois to win the AMCU-8 tournament, however the AMCU-8 would not receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament until the 1986-87 season. Kevin Mackey
Kevin Mackey (born August 21, 1946) is a former head coach of men's basketball at Cleveland State University. His CSU Vikings upset the Indiana Hoosiers and the Saint Joseph's Hawks to make the Sweet 16 in the 1986 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. He is also known for recruiting future NBA player Manute Bol. Early coaching career Mackey was a successful high school coach at the former Don Bosco Technical High School in Boston, winning the 1976 state championship and three consecutive Class A Catholic championships. From 1977 to 1983, he served as an assistant coach at Boston College under Tom Davis and Gary Williams in the early days of the Big East Conference. He was well known as a top recruiter, and was well known for landing inner-city prospects. 1985–86 Michigan Wolverines Men's Basketball Team
The 1985–86 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team represented the University of Michigan in intercollegiate college basketball during the 1985–86 season. The team played its home games in the Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and was a member of the Big Ten Conference. Under the direction of head coach Bill Frieder, the team repeated as the Big Ten Conference Champion. The team earned the number two seed in the 1986 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament where it advanced one round before losing. The team began the season ranked number three and ended the season ranked number five after peaking at number two in the Associated Press Top Twenty Poll. Missouri State University (MSU or MO State), formerly Southwest Missouri State University, is a public university in Springfield, Missouri.
