1985 United States Women's National Soccer Team
The 1985 United States women's national soccer team was the first USWNT to play international matches. The team played four matches in Jesolo, Italy, at the Mundialito tournament, losing three and drawing one of the matches. Coaches Players Creation of the team A national women's soccer team had been selected in 1982, 1983, and 1984 but never played together. Club teams had represented the United States in international tournaments, with the Dallas Sting winning the first title for the United States at a FIFA-sanctioned world tournament in 1984. With interest growing in women's soccer, about 70 women, mostly players on University teams, were invited to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to participate in the 1985 Olympic Sports Festival, the first time women's soccer was included among the events. The United States women's national soccer team (USWNT) represents the United States in international women's soccer. The team is the most successful in international women's soccer, winning four Women's World Cup titles (1991, 1999, 2015, and 2019), four Olympic gold medals ( 1996, 2004, 2008, and 2012), and nine CONCACAF Gold Cups. It medaled in every World Cup and Olympic tournament in women's soccer from 1991 to 2015, before being knocked out in the quarterfinal of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Kathy Ridgewell
Kathleen Ann Ridgewell-Williams (; born May 18, 1965) is an American former soccer player who played as a forward, making three appearances for the United States women's national team. Career Ridgewell-Williams attended Enumclaw High School and Auburn Senior High School, where she played soccer. She attended college at Green River Community College for her freshman year. For her sophomore year, she transferred to Western Washington University, where she played soccer for the Vikings in 1985, finishing the season as the team's top scorer with thirteen goals while also registering four assists. She was selected as a NAIA First-Team All-American, and was also included in the NAIA All-District First Team. However, she decided to sit out the following season in order to focus on making the U.S. team at the Olympic Festival. Emily Jo Harner (; born February 1, 1963) is an American former soccer player, who played on the U.S. women's national soccer team in 1985, the first official U.S women's national team in history. The Virginia Cavaliers women's soccer team represents University of Virginia in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) of NCAA Division I women's college soccer. The team has won three regular season conference championships, in 2013, 2015 and 2021. The Cavaliers have also won the ACC Women's Soccer Tournament twice, in 2004 and 2012. Ann Orrison
Ann Kimberly Orrison-Germain (; born June 29, 1961) is an American former soccer player who was a member of the United States women's national soccer team from 1985 to 1986. She played field hockey and lacrosse at the University of Virginia. Personal life Orrison was born in Arlington County, Virginia on June 29, 1961, to Karen () and Charles Orrison, and grew up in McLean. She married Everett Grant Germain III on June 21, 1986, in Fairfax, Virginia. She is the sister-in-law of fellow U.S. international Suzy Cobb Germain, who later married Everett's brother Gregory in 1989. Sharon McMurtry
Sharon F. McMurtry (formerly Remer; born October 31, 1960) is an American retired soccer player and was a member of the United States women's national soccer team from 1985 to 1986. She was the first recipient of the U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year award in 1985. McMurtry was raised in Bothell, Washington, and attended Inglemoor High School, where she played volleyball and basketball, in addition to soccer on the boys' team. She was also a member of the Tacoma Cozars club team. At Seattle University, she played basketball for the Redhawks, not soccer. After one year of college, she dropped out to pursue a short-lived semi-professional basketball career in the Netherlands. She later played and coached in Australia. Lori Ann Henry (born March 20, 1966) is an American retired soccer defender and former member and captain of the United States women's national soccer team. She was the only player from the first match ever played by the national team who made it to the 1991 Women's World Cup Championship in China and one of two players to hit double-figures in caps. Margaret J. "Tucka" Healy (born September 20, 1962) is an American former soccer player who played as a forward, making three appearances for the United States women's national team. She later worked as an employee for Google. Career In college, Healy played for the California Golden Bears from 1981 to 1985, though she missed the 1984 season. Her first season in 1981 was under the AIAW, while the remaining were in the NCAA. In her NCAA career, she scored 45 goals and had 10 assists. She was an NSCAA Third Team All-American in 1983 and 1985, and was included in the NSCAA All-Region team in 1985. Ruth Kay Harker (born June 28, 1963) is an American former soccer player who played as a goalkeeper, making three appearances for the United States women's national team. Career Harker began playing soccer at 14, initially as a midfielder before moving into goal. She was quickly noticed by coaches, earning her overseas training sessions in Sweden in Finland. Harker attended high school at Pattonville and later Parkway North, where she participated in basketball, cross country running, and track and field, in addition to soccer.
