The 1985 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 1–3 at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia Hampton () is an independent city (United States), independent city in the Commonwealth (U.S. state), Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. Top-seeded VCU defeated rival Old Dominion in the championship game, 87–82, to win their third Sun Belt men's basketball tournament. The Rams, in turn, received an automatic bid to the 1985 NCAA tournament. They were joined in the tournament by fellow Sun Belt members UAB and Old Dominion, both of whom received at-large bids. Format No changes were made to the tournament format. All eight conference members were placed into the initial quarterfinal round, and each team was seeded based on its regular season conference record. Hampton Coliseum
Hampton Coliseum is a multi-purpose arena in Hampton, Virginia. Construction began on May 24, 1968. The venue held its first event on December 1, 1969, with the nearby College of William & Mary playing North Carolina State University in a college men's basketball game. On January 31, 1970, the Coliseum formally opened as the first large multi-purpose arena in the Hampton Roads region and the state of Virginia (opening a year before the Norfolk Scope in Norfolk.) The 1984–85 UAB Blazers men's basketball team represented the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a member of the Sun Belt Conference during the 1984–85 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. This was head coach Gene Bartow's 7th season at UAB, and the Blazers played their home games at BJCC Coliseum. They finished the season 25–9, 11–3 in Sun Belt play and lost in the semifinals of the Sun Belt tournament. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as No. 7 seed in the Midwest region. The 1985 Sun Belt Conference women's basketball tournament was the postseason women's basketball tournament for the Sun Belt Conference beginning on March 7, 1985, and ending on March 9, 1985, in Norfolk, Virginia, U.S. at the Old Dominion University Fieldhouse. Top-seeded Old Dominion defeated Western Kentucky in the championship game, 76–63, to win their third Sun Belt women's basketball tournament. The Lady Monarchs received an automatic bid to the 1985 NCAA tournament. They were joined by conference runner-up Western Kentucky, who received an at-large bid.
