1984–85 Philadelphia 76ers Season
The 1984–85 Philadelphia 76ers season was notable for being Charles Barkley's rookie season. Barkley joined a veteran team that included Julius Erving, Moses Malone, and Maurice Cheeks, three players who took Philadelphia to the 1983 NBA championship. The Sixers finished with a regular season record of 58–24, five games behind the Celtics in the Atlantic Division. In the first round of the playoffs, they beat the Washington Bullets 3–1, and then in the Eastern semi-finals they swept the Milwaukee Bucks. The Sixers in the Eastern Conference Finals were defeated in five games by the Boston Celtics. In the game three loss, Julius Erving was booed by the home Sixer fans. Billy Cunningham
William John Cunningham (born June 3, 1943) is an American former professional basketball player and coach, who was nicknamed the ''Kangaroo Kid'' for his leaping and record-setting rebounding abilities. He spent a total of 17 seasons with the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers (nine as player, eight as coach), and two seasons as a player with the Carolina Cougars of the ABA. One of basketball's all-time greats, Cunningham was elected to the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame and honored by selection to both the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams as one of its legendary players, as well as to the ABA All-Time Team. He was All-ACC, the ACC Player of the Year, and an All-American in college, later named to the ACC 50th Anniversary men's basketball team honoring the fifty best players in Atlantic Coast Conference history. 1984 NBA Draft
The 1984 NBA draft was the 37th annual draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). It was held at the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York, on June 19, 1984, before the 1984–85 season. The draft is generally considered to be one of the greatest in NBA history, with four Hall of Famers being drafted in the first sixteen picks and five overall. It included first pick Akeem Olajuwon, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and John Stockton. The draft was broadcast in the United States on the USA Network. In this draft, 23 NBA teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. Rich Congo
Richard S. Congo (born May 17, 1961) is an American former basketball player for Lafayette College and Drexel University. He was a two-time all-conference performer and the 1984 East Coast Conference Player of the Year as a senior. Early life Congo is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he attended Overbrook High School. As a senior he averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds per game. College career Congo chose to play for the Lafayette Leopards after his prep career. In 1979–80, his true freshman season, he averaged 8.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He took a break for personal reasons midway through the season, though he came back and helped the Leopards gain a berth into the 1980 NIT where they lost in the first round to Virginia. Gary Springer
Gary Springer Sr. (born February 18, 1962) is an American former professional basketball player who is best known for his collegiate career at Iona between 1980–81 and 1983–84. High school career Springer grew up in Harlem, New York and attended Benjamin Franklin High School (BFHS). Earl Harrison (basketball)
Earl Harrison (born August 20, 1961) is a former American professional basketball player. Harrison grew up in Lindenwold, New Jersey. During his pro club career, he played at the power forward and center positions. College career Harrison played college basketball at Morehead State University, with the Morehead State Eagles, from 1981 to 1984. Professional career Harrison was drafted in the fourth round, with the 91st overall pick, of the 1984 NBA draft, by the Philadelphia 76ers. He played with the La Crosse Catbirds, in the Continental Basketball Association, in the 1985–86 season. Harrison also played with the Greek club Pagrati Athens, from 1989 to 1992. Earl Gilbert "Butch" Graves Jr. (born January 5, 1962) is an American businessman and retired basketball player. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he is a Scarsdale High School graduate. Osie Leon Wood III (born March 25, 1962), is an American former professional basketball player. A college All-American, he was a first round NBA draft pick, and both an Olympic and Pan-Am Games gold-medalist. He subsequently has had a career as an NBA referee. Career A 6'3" point guard from Saint Monica Catholic High School, Wood was an All-American at California State University-Fullerton.
