1984–85 Newcastle United F.C. Season
During the 1984-85 season, Newcastle United participated in the Football League First Division. Season Synopsis Newcastle started their first season back in the top flight under the leadership of World Cup winner Jack Charlton after previous manager Arthur Cox left in the close-season due to lack of funds from the board for squad strengthening. Hopes of success were high due to the emergence of local youngsters Chris Waddle, Peter Beardsley and Paul Gascoigne. Waddle and Beardsley had progressed into potential world class forwards under the management of Cox during the promotion campaign of the previous season, Waddle would win international recognition during the season before being sold to Spurs. George Reilly
George Reilly (born 14 September 1957) is a Scottish former footballer. He played for Corby Town, Northampton Town, Cambridge United, Watford, Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion. Reilly scored the winning goal for Watford against Plymouth Argyle in the 1984 FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park and played in the 1984 FA Cup Final itself. Willie McFaul
William Stewart McFaul (born 1 October 1943), known as Willie or Iam McFaul, is a Northern Irish former football player and now coach. He spent most of his career with Newcastle United. McFaul was born in Coleraine. He joined Newcastle United from Linfield in his native Northern Ireland in 1966 after impressing in a friendly match. It took two years for him to establish himself as Newcastle's goalkeeper, a position he held until after the 1974–75 season. A notable moment in his career came when he helped Newcastle to the 1974 FA Cup Final at Wembley. Newcastle were beaten 3-0 by Liverpool, whose first two goals were from shots by Kevin Keegan and Steve Heighway that McFaul got his fingertips to but was unable to stop. Pat Heard
Pat Heard (born 17 March 1960 in Hull) is an English retired football midfielder and left-back. He was a member of Villa’s history-making ‘82 squad. Early life and youth career In the mid-70s, Heard attended Malet Lambert High School and played for Hull City Schoolboys and Humberside Boys. David McCreery
David McCreery (born 16 September 1957) is a Northern Irish former international footballer who played professionally for Newcastle United and many other clubs during his long career. He mostly played in midfield, but was very versatile, and during his career played in every position bar goalkeeper. McCreery made 67 appearances for the Northern Ireland national football team, and played in the World Cup finals of 1982 and 1986. He was named in the All Star Select XI at the World Cup 1982 for his continuous high quality performances. McCreery started his career with Manchester United, where he was a used substitute as they won the 1977 FA Cup and FA Charity Shield. Neil McDonald (footballer)
Neil Raymond McDonald (born 2 November 1965) is a football manager, coach and former player, in the right back and midfield positions. He is currently assistant manager of Barrow. During his career he played for the England under 21 team. As a manager, he has been in charge at Carlisle United and Östersunds FK. On 18 December 2008 he was appointed Assistant Manager of Blackburn Rovers, and was sacked on 13 December 2010 along with manager Sam Allardyce. On 1 June 2011, Allardyce announced McDonald as his assistant manager at West Ham United. On 2 June 2015, McDonald was appointed as manager of Blackpool on a rolling one-year contract, leaving the post on 18 May 2016. Kenny Wharton
Kenneth Wharton (born 28 November 1960) is an English former professional footballer, who is currently the manager of Newcastle Blue Star FC. Playing career Wharton left school at 15 and captained Newcastle Schoolboys before joining his hometown club Newcastle United on a part-time basis in 1978, turning professional a year later when Bill McGarry was in charge. Wharton went on to make 290 league appearances—335 in all competitions—and also scored 26 goals. On 2 April 1988, Wharton sat on the ball in a 4–0 victory over Luton Town. Wes Saunders
Wesley Saunders (born 23 February 1963) is an English former professional football player and manager, who played as a central defender. He played for Newcastle United, Bradford City, Carlisle United and Torquay United in the Football League and Dundee in the Scottish Football League. He later managed Torquay United from 1998 to 2001. Playing career Saunders was born in Sunderland and brought up in East Boldon, attending Boldon Comprehensive School. Glenn Roeder
Glenn Victor Roeder (13 December 1955 – 28 February 2021) was an English professional football player and manager. As a player, Roeder played as a defender for Arsenal, Leyton Orient, Queens Park Rangers, Notts County, Newcastle United, Watford and Gillingham. He also represented the England national B team. His managerial career included spells with numerous clubs including Gillingham, Watford, West Ham United, Newcastle United (with whom he won the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup) and Norwich City. John Anderson (footballer, Born 1959)
John Christopher Patrick Anderson (born 7 November 1959) is a former professional footballer who played as a defender. He represented the Republic of Ireland, and played for club sides West Bromwich Albion, Preston North End and Newcastle United. Club career Anderson was on the books of West Bromwich Albion between 1976 and 1979. Despite playing in 92 reserve team games for the club, he never made a single first team appearance for the club in a major competition. Anderson signed for Newcastle United in 1982 on a free transfer from Preston North End. His signing was low key because the club had recently pulled off a major coup in signing England captain Kevin Keegan. Jeff Clarke (English Footballer)
Jeffrey Derek Clarke (born 18 January 1954 in Hemsworth, England) is an English former footballer who is currently head academy physiotherapist at Scottish Premiership club Dundee United. Malcolm Brown (English Footballer)
Malcolm Brown (born 13 December 1956) is a former professional footballer who made more than 500 appearances in the Football League in the 1970s and 1980s. He played as a right back for Bury, Huddersfield Town, where he spent the majority of his career, Newcastle United, Rochdale and Stockport County. Brown began his career as an apprentice at Bury, before moving to Huddersfield Town in 1977, where he helped the club to two promotions during Mick Buxton's reign as manager. He eventually left for Newcastle United in 1983, but missed the whole of the 1983–84 promotion season because of injury.
