1984–85 Alabama Crimson Tide Men's Basketball Team
The 1984–85 Alabama Crimson Tide men's basketball team represented the University of Alabama in the 1984-85 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team's head coach was Wimp Sanderson, who was in his fifth season at Alabama. The team played their home games at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They finished the season 23–10, 11–7 in SEC play, finishing in a tie for third place. Key additions were freshman forward Derrick McKey, the Tide's lone signee from Meridian High School in Mississippi, and guard Mark Gottfried, a transfer from Oral Roberts University. The Tide made it to the 1985 SEC men's basketball tournament final, but lost to Auburn. They received an at-large bid to the 1985 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, where they defeated Arizona and VCU before losing to North Carolina State in the Sweet Sixteen. Wimp Sanderson
Winfrey "Wimp" Sanderson (born August 8, 1937) is a retired American college basketball coach. He coached at the University of Alabama from 1981 to 1992 and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock from 1994 to 1999. Sanderson was born in Florence, Alabama. He prepped at Coffee High School and graduated from Florence State College, now known as the University of North Alabama, in 1959. In 1960 he became a graduate assistant under Hayden Riley at Alabama, and in 1961 he was made a full-time assistant. He served in this capacity for 20 years under both Riley and C. M. Newton, eventually becoming Newton's top assistant. When Newton resigned to become assistant commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, Sanderson was named his successor. In 12 years as head coach his teams averaged 21.8 wins a year, with a 267–119 record, and they won 5 SEC tournaments. They played in one NIT and ten NCAA tournaments making the Sweet 16 six times. Hayes High School (Birmingham, Alabama)
Carol W. Hayes High School was a public 9–12 high school in Birmingham, Alabama. It was closed after the 2007–08 school year. History The school was established in September 1960 in Avondale, in the eastern section of Birmingham. It is named for Dr. Carol William Hayes, the city's former "Director of Negro Schools". The school added a twelfth grade in 1961, and the first seniors graduated in May 1962. Hayes remained an all-black high school until it was desegregated in 1970. Carol W. Hayes High School graduated senior classes from 1962 to 1989, when it was converted into a middle school. In 2003 it reverted to a high school, and graduated its first class in sixteen years in 2005. The 1985 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament took place from March 6–9, 1985 at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex in Birmingham, Alabama. The Auburn Tigers men's basketball team won their first ever SEC Tournament title in the championship game on March 9, 1985. Coleman Coliseum is a 15,383-seat multi-purpose arena in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on the campus of the University of Alabama.
