Alan Abraham
Alan Rockwell Abraham (1 February 1931 – 2 October 2020) was the 27th Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. Career Abraham, an engineering graduate from Saint Mary's University was involved in federal politics and helped with the organization of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's tours of the Maritimes. In 1983, Governor General Edward Schreyer, on the advice of Prime Minister Trudeau, appointed Abraham Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. Abraham was the second youngest appointee as Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia since Confederation at the time of his appointment. He was then age 53; one of his predecessors, Hon. James Robson Douglas of Amherst, was 49 when he was appointed in 1925. Abaraham died in 2020 at the age of 89. Awards and recognition In 1996, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada. John Elvin Shaffner
John Elvin Shaffner (March 3, 1911 – June 11, 2001) was a businessman and political figure in Nova Scotia. He served as the 26th Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia from 1978 to 1984. His surname also appears as Schaffner in some sources. He was born in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia and was educated there, at Acadia University and at the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in Boston. In 1936, he married Nell Margaret Potter (she died 30 September 2010). Shaffner worked as a chartered accountant for several years. William Anthony Paddon
William Anthony Paddon, (July 10, 1914 – January 5, 1995) was a Canadian surgeon and the seventh lieutenant governor of Newfoundland from 1981 to 1986. Born in Indian Harbour, Labrador, Newfoundland, the son of Dr. Harry Locke Paddon (1881-1939) and Mina Gilchrist, a physician and a nurse, respectively, with the International Grenfell Association. He received a Bachelor of Science in 1936 from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. He received his Doctor of Medicine in 1940 from New York Medical College. During World War II, he served with the Royal Canadian Navy as a surgeon. After the war, he returned to Labrador with the International Grenfell Association, serving as doctor at the North West River hospital. He was the director of the IGA from 1960 until his retirement in 1978. He married Sheila Fortescue, also an IGA nurse. George Stanley
Colonel George Francis Gillman Stanley (July 6, 1907September 13, 2002) was a Canadian historian, author, soldier, teacher, public servant, and designer of the Canadian flag. Early life and education George F.G. Stanley was born in Calgary, Alberta in 1907 and received a BA from the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He went to Keble College, University of Oxford, in 1929 as the Rhodes Scholar from Alberta, and held a Beit Fellowship in Imperial Studies and a Royal Society of Canada Scholarship. He earned a BA, MA, MLitt and DPhil. Always a keen athlete, he played for the Oxford University Ice Hockey Club, which won the Spengler Cup in 1931. Pearl McGonigal
Pearl Kathryne McGonigal (born June 10, 1929) is a retired Manitoba politician and office-holder. She was a prominent Winnipeg-area municipal politician from 1969 to 1981, and served as the province's 19th Lieutenant Governor from October 23, 1981 to December 11, 1986. She was the first woman to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba and only the second woman to serve as a viceroy in Canadian history, after Pauline McGibbon of Ontario. McGonigal was born in Melville, Saskatchewan. Before entering politics, she spent nine years in the banking sector and seven as a merchandising representative. McGonigal was elected to the city council of St. James-Assiniboia in 1969, two years before its amalgamation with Winnipeg.
