1984 Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1984 Southland Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 8–10, 1984 with quarterfinal matchups being held at the home arena of the higher seed and the semifinals and championship game played at the Beaumont Civic Center in Beaumont, Texas. Louisiana Tech defeated in the championship game, 68–65, to win their first Southland men's basketball tournament. The Bulldogs received a bid to the 1984 NCAA Tournament as No. 10 seed in the Midwest region. They were the only Southland member invited to the tournament. Format All seven of the conference's members participated in the tournament field. They were seeded based on regular season conference records, with the top seed earning a bye into the semifinal round. The other six teams began play in the quarterfinal round. Beaumont Civic Center
The Beaumont Civic Center, in downtown Beaumont, Texas, is a 6,500-seat arena where concerts, conventions, trade shows and exhibitions are held. Banquet maximum capacity is 2,000. 1983–84 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Basketball Team
The 1983–84 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs basketball team represented Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana for the 1983–84 season. Led by head coach Andy Russo, the Bulldogs played their home games at Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston, Louisiana. After finishing 3rd in the conference regular season standings, Louisiana Tech won the Southland Conference men's basketball tournament to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament. After an opening round win over Fresno State, the team was beaten by eventual National runner-up Houston, 77–69. Louisiana Tech finished the season with a 26–7 record (8–4 Southland). Andy Russo
Andy Russo (born May 26, 1948) was a college basketball coach at Louisiana Tech and at Washington. He compiled a 60–61 record through four seasons at Washington, and resigned at the end of the 1988-89 season after he led the Huskies to a pair of NCAA post season appearances and one NIT tournament during his tenure. Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Southland Conference's men's basketball tournament began in 1981, with the winner of the tournament receiving the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. From 1981 to 2001, the first round of the tournament took place at the higher seed, with the remaining rounds at a set location. In 2002, the Southland changed the format to play games at the campus of sites of each higher seed, during every round of the tournament. This was changed again in 2007, the first year that the conference selected a neutral site for all rounds of the tournament. 1984 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1984 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 53 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 13, 1984, and ended with the championship game on April 2 in Seattle. A total of 52 games were played. This was the last tournament in which some teams earned first-round byes as the field expanded to 64 teams beginning in the 1985 tournament when each team played in the first round. It was also the second year with a preliminary round; preliminary games would not be played again until 2001. Ruston is a small city and the parish seat of Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is the largest city in the Eastern Ark-La-Tex region.
