1984 Australian Open – Women's Singles
Chris Evert defeated Helena Suková in the final, 6–7(4–7), 6–1, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1984 Australian Open. It was her second Australian Open singles title and her 16th major singles title overall. With her third round victory, Evert became the first player in the Open Era to win 1,000 matches. She finished the tournament with a 1,003-97 career match record. Martina Navratilova was the defending champion, but was defeated in the semifinals by Suková. Navratilova entered this tournament with a 70-match winning streak, having won the previous six major singles titles, and attempting to complete a Grand Slam. Her 74-match win streak remains an Open Era record. Christine Marie Evert (born December 21, 1954), known as Chris Evert Lloyd from 1979 to 1987, is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. Evert won 18 major singles titles, including a record seven French Open titles and a joint-record six US Open titles (tied with Serena Williams). She was ranked world No. 1 for 260 weeks, and was the year-end world No. 1 singles player seven times (1974–78, 1980, 1981). Alongside Martina Navratilova, her greatest rival, Evert dominated women's tennis in the 1970s and 1980s. Evert reached 34 major singles finals, the most in history. Joanna Mary Durie (born 27 July 1960) is a former world No. 5 tennis player from the United Kingdom. During her career, she also reached No. 9 in doubles, and won two Grand Slam titles, both in the mixed doubles with Jeremy Bates. Annabel Nicola Croft (born 12 July 1966) is a former professional British female tennis player and current radio and television presenter. As a tennis player she won the WTA Tour event Virginia Slims of San Diego and represented Great Britain in the Fed Cup and the Wightman Cup. Carina Karlsson (born 11 September 1963) is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. Biography Karlsson is most noted for being the first qualifier to reach the ladies quarterfinals of Wimbledon, which she achieved at the 1984 Wimbledon Championships. Yvonne Vermaak
Yvonne Vermaak (born 18 December 1956) is a former tour tennis player who represented her native South Africa. Vermaak's best result was reaching the semi-finals of the 1983 Wimbledon Championships, defeating Virginia Wade in the quarter-finals. In 1977 she won the All England Plate, a competition for players who were defeated in the first three rounds of the Wimbledon singles competition.
