1983–84 Michigan Wolverines Men's Basketball Team
The 1983–84 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team represented the University of Michigan in intercollegiate college basketball during the 1983–84 season. The team played its home games in the Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and was a member of the Big Ten Conference. Under the direction of head coach Bill Frieder, the team finished tied for fourth in the Big Ten Conference. The team earned an invitation to the 1984 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) where it was crowned champion. Although during the seventeen weeks of Associated Press Top Twenty Poll the team was ranked twice, including a peak of number fifteen, it began and finished the season unranked and it also ended the season unranked in the final UPI Coaches' Poll. Bill Frieder
William Samuel Frieder (born March 3, 1942) is a former basketball coach at Michigan (1981–1989) and Arizona State (1989–1997). Frieder's 1985–86 team was the last Michigan team to win a Big Ten Championship until the 2011–12 team. Just before the 1989 NCAA tournament, Frieder announced that he would leave Michigan for Arizona State at the end of the season. Michigan athletic director Bo Schembechler ordered Frieder to leave immediately, and named top assistant Steve Fisher as the interim coach for the tournament. Schembechler famously announced, "A Michigan man will coach Michigan, not an Arizona State man." The Wolverines went on to win the tournament and Fisher was officially given the head coaching job. The Coaches Poll is a weekly ranking of the top 25 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) college football, Division I college basketball, and Division I college baseball teams. The football version of the poll has been known officially as the Amway Coaches Poll since 2014. The football rankings are compiled by the Amway Board of Coaches which is made up of 62 head coaches at Division I FBS institutions. All coaches are members of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The basketball rankings are compiled by the USA Today Sports Board of Coaches which is made up of 32 head coaches at Division I institutions. National Invitation Tournament
The National Invitational Tournament (NIT) is a men's college basketball tournament operated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Played at regional sites and traditionally at Madison Square Garden (Final Four) in New York City each March and April, it was founded in 1938 and was originally the most prestigious post-season showcase for college basketball. The 2021 tournament, in which all games were played in Denton and Frisco, Texas, marked the first time that the NIT's semifinals and championship games were not hosted at Madison Square Garden; MSG won't play host to the games entirely starting in 2023. Over time, it became eclipsed by the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, which is now known informally as "March Madness." 1983–84 Illinois Fighting Illini Men's Basketball Team
The 1983–84 Illinois Fighting Illini men's basketball team represented the University of Illiniois. Regular season The 1983–84 season brought Illinois its 12th Big Ten Conference championship in a season where Illinois had four overtime games including an epic four-overtime 75–66 victory over Michigan. The next game was a two-overtime win at Iowa, Lou Henson’s 400th victory as a college head coach. The Illini recorded a 26-5 mark and were 15-3 in Big Ten play, tying Purdue for the league title. Mike McGee (basketball)
Michael Ray McGee (born July 29, 1959) is an American professional basketball coach and former player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He won two NBA championships as a player with the Los Angeles Lakers. Early years McGee was born in Tyler, Texas. He then moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he played high school basketball at Omaha North High School. He averaged 38 points per game and scored 916 total points as a senior in the 1976-77 season. He earned 10 Metro Conference scoring records and had an average of 38.1 points per game. He was named to the Nebraska All-Star State Team at least twice in the 1970s and was also The World-Herald athlete of the year in 1977. Blocked Shot
In basketball, a block or blocked shot occurs when a defensive player legally deflects a field goal attempt from an offensive player to prevent a score. The defender is not allowed to make contact with the offensive player's hand (unless the defender is also in contact with the ball) or a '' foul'' is called. In order to be legal, the block must occur while the shot is traveling upward or at its apex. A deflected field goal that is made does not count as a blocked shot and simply counts as a successful field goal attempt for shooter plus the points awarded to the shooting team. For the shooter, a blocked shot is counted as a missed field goal attempt. Gary Grant (born April 21, 1965) is a retired American professional basketball player at the point guard position in the National Basketball Association (NBA). College career Gary "The General" Grant played for Canton McKinley High School and collegiately at the University of Michigan. Gary received his BA in Kinesiology. Ricky Green
Rickey Green (born August 18, 1954) is an American retired professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Green, a and point guard, led Chicago's Hirsch High School to the 1973 IHSA Class AA State championship. He then played college basketball at Vincennes University and the University of Michigan; at the latter school, his team lost to the undefeated Big Ten Conference rival Indiana Hoosiers in the championship game of the 1976 NCAA tournament. He then led the 1976–77 Wolverines to the Big Ten regular season championship, earning 1977 All-American recognition. Antoine Joubert
Antoine Glen Joubert (born February 20, 1965) is an American basketball coach and former professional player. He played high school basketball at Southwestern in his native city of Detroit, Michigan, where he was ranked as one of the best players of his class, winning the Michigan Mr. Basketball award and being named a McDonald's All-American as a senior in 1983. He signed to play for Michigan in college, and was a three-year starter. He was selected in the 6th round of the 1987 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons but he did not make the team, and went on to have a 15-year career playing professional basketball abroad, winning MVP honors in Venezuela and having notable stints in Mexico and Poland. In basketball, an assist is attributed to a player who passes the ball to a teammate in a way that leads directly to a score by field goal, meaning that they were "assisting" in the basket.
