1983 US Open – Women's Singles
Martina Navratilova defeated the defending champion Chris Evert in the final, 6–1, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1983 US Open. Martina Navratilova ( cs, Martina Navrátilová ; ; born October 18, 1956) is a Czech–American, former professional tennis player. Widely considered among the greatest tennis players of all time, Navratilova won 18 major singles titles, 31 major women's doubles titles, and 10 major mixed doubles titles, for a combined total of 59 major titles, the most in the Open Era. Kathryn "Kathy" Jordan (born December 3, 1959) is a former American tennis player. During her career, she won seven Grand Slam titles, five of them in women's doubles and two in mixed doubles. Beatriz "Gigi" Fernández (born February 22, 1964) is a Puerto Rican former professional tennis player. Fernández won 17 major doubles titles and two Olympic gold medals representing the United States, and reached the world No. 1 ranking in doubles. Emilse Raponi Longo (born December 19, 1957) is a former professional tennis player from Argentina. Biography Tennis career Longo began competing on the professional tour in 1978, as Emilse Raponi. She had early success at her home tournament, the 1978 River Plate Championships, making it through to a WTA Tour final in her first season. En route she upset top seed Regina Maršíková, but was unable to get past Caroline Stoll in the final. In 1979 she made her debut for Argentina's Fed Cup team and went on to feature in a total of 11 ties for her native country. Raffaella Reggi (; born 27 November 1965) is a former professional tennis player from Italy. Career As a junior, Reggi won the Orange Bowl 16 and under in 1981. She was a member of the Continental Players Cup Team in 1982. Reggi won the mixed doubles title at the US Open in 1986, partnering Sergio Casal. Allen attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where she was a four-time All-American (1981-1984) and won the 1983 NCAA Division I Women's Doubles Championship and the 1983 Pan American Games women's doubles, both times with partner Gretchen Rush. Patricia Hy-Boulais (born 22 August 1965) is a former tennis player. She turned professional on 12 October 1986. Early in her career she represented Hong Kong (since the beginning until the end of the 1987 season). She became a citizen of Canada in 1991. However, she represented Canada since the beginning of the 1988 season.
