1983 MAC Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1983 Mid-American Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 10-12 at various Mid-American Conference, MAC basketball areans. Second seeded 1982–83 Ohio Bobcats men's basketball team, Ohio defeated top-seeded in the championship game by the score of 74–64 to win their first MAC men's basketball tournament and a bid to the 1983 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, NCAA tournament. There they defeated 1982–83 Illinois State Redbirds men's basketball team, Illinois State before losing to 1982–83 Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball team, Kentucky in the second round. John Devereaux of Ohio was named the tournament MVP. Format Seven of the ten MAC teams participated. Games were played on the home court of the better seeded team. The final was played at Anderson Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio. Anderson Arena
Anderson Arena is an indoor arena located in Memorial Hall on the campus of Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio and is currently home to the Bowling Green Falcons women's gymnastics team. The arena, which opened in 1960, served as the home arena for the Bowling Green men's and women's basketball teams and women's volleyball team until 2011. Following their season finales in 2010 and 2011, the teams moved into the newly built Stroh Center on the east side of campus. It originally had a seating capacity of 4,700 people for basketball games. For gymnastics meets, the capacity is 2,800. 1982–83 Ohio Bobcats Men's Basketball Team
The 1982–83 Ohio Bobcats men's basketball team represented Ohio University as a member of the Mid-American Conference in the college basketball season of 1982–83. The team was coached by Danny Nee in his third season at Ohio. They played their home games at Convocation Center. The Bobcats finished with a record of 23–9 and second in the MAC regular season with a conference record of 12–6. They won the MAC tournament with wins over Eastern Michigan, Toledo, and MAC regular season champion Bowling Green. John Devereaux was named the tournament MVP. They received a bid to the NCAA tournament. There they defeated Illinois State before losing to Kentucky in the second round. 23 wins was the school record at the time. Danny Nee
Daniel Hugh Nee (born June 18, 1945) is an American basketball coach. He served as the head men's basketball coach at Ohio University from 1980 to 1986, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln from 1986 to 2000, Robert Morris University in 2000–01, Duquesne University from 2001 to 2006, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy from 2010 to 2014, compiling a career college basketball coaching record of 461–433. Early life Born Daniel Hugh Nee, Danny Nee grew up in his native Brooklyn, New York. His father Patrick immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland. "Rough is what I grew up knowing, and it's what I still know," said Nee in an interview with ''Sports Illustrated'' in 1991. John Devereaux
John Devereaux (born January 17, 1962) is an American former basketball player. He had a long professional career in Europe, where he played in the top leagues in Spain, Italy, France and Germany. He played college basketball at Ohio University, where as a senior he was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year. Devereaux committed to Ohio out of Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, where he did not play until his junior year. He developed into a top player in the Mid-American Conference (MAC), named honorable mention all-conference as a sophomore, then first-team All-MAC as a junior and senior. He was also named MAC Player of the Year in his senior year. For his career at Ohio, he averaged 13.3 points and 8.5 rebounds for his Bobcat career. Following the close of his college career, Devereaux was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in the fourth round of the 1984 NBA draft (78th pick overall). Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Mid-American Conference men's basketball tournament is the NCAA Division I postseason single-elimination tournament for the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The winner of the tournament receives the MAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship. As of the next MAC tournament in 2021, the top eight teams in conference play will qualify for the tournament. Since 2000, the MAC Tournament has been held at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland and is planned to be held there through at least 2030. The finals are broadcast on ESPN2 and the semi and quarterfinals are broadcast on Spectrum Sports and ESPN3. The tournament was first played in 1980 and expanded to include all conference members in 2000. The Mid-American Conference (MAC) is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I collegiate athletic conference with a membership base in the Great Lakes region that stretches from Western New York to Illinois. Nine of the twelve full member schools are in Ohio and Michigan, with single members located in Illinois, Indiana, and New York. The 1982–83 Illinois State Redbirds men's basketball team represented Illinois State University during the 1982–83 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Redbirds, led by fifth year head coach Bob Donewald, played their home games at Horton Field House and were members of the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds finished the season 24–7, 13–5 in conference play to finish in second place. They were the number one seed for the Missouri Valley Conference tournament as Wichita State University, who finished first in the conference season, were serving the second of a two-year probation and therefore prohibited from postseason competition.
