1982–83 Úrvalsdeild Karla
The 1982–83 Úrvalsdeild karla was the 32nd season of the Úrvalsdeild karla, the top tier men's basketball league on Iceland. The season started on 1 October 1982 and ended on 21 March 1983. Valur won its second title by posting the best record in the league with a win against Keflavík in the last day of the season. Competition format The participating teams first played a conventional round-robin schedule with every team playing each opponent twice "home" and twice "away" for a total of 20 games. The top team won the national championship whilst the bottom team was relegated to Division I. Valur (basketball Club)
The Valur men's basketball team, commonly known as Valur, is a basketball team based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is part of the Valur multi-sport club. History The club was founded as ''Gosi'' on 25 December 1951 and was one of the founding members of the Icelandic men's top division. On 22 December 1957 the club changed its name to ''Körfuknattleiksfélag Reykjavíkur'' (English: Reykjavík Basketball Club) and played under that name until 1970. On 3 October 1970 the club merged into Valur sports club and became its basketball department. Under the new name, Valur had considerable success in the 1980's, winning the Icelandic championship two times, in 1980 and 1983, and the Icelandic cup three times, 1980, 1981 and 1983. In 1992, Valur reached the Úrvalsdeild finals where it lost to Keflavík 2-3. In 2022, Valur won its third national championship after beating Tindastóll in the Úrvalsdeild finals. The Icelandic Basketball Association (''Icelandic:Körfuknattleikssamband Íslands - KKÍ'') is the national governing body of basketball in Iceland and is a member of the continental association FIBA Europe and the global International Basketball Federation (FIBA). ''Tíminn'' () was an Icelandic daily newspaper founded in 1917. It had close ties with the Icelandic Progressive Party but after years of financial difficulties, the party severed all ties with the paper in 1993. It merged with the newspaper ''Dagur'' in 1996, becoming ''Dagur-Tíminn''. Its last edition came out on 28 August 1996. The Portland Trail Blazers (colloquially known as the Blazers) are an American professional basketball team based in Portland, Oregon. Njarðvík Men's Basketball
The Njarðvík men's basketball team, commonly known as Njarðvík or UMFN, is the men's basketball department of Ungmennafélag Njarðvíkur, based in the town of Reykjanesbær in Iceland. It is one of the most successful men's team in Icelandic basketball, winning 17 national championships. The team, then known as Íþróttafélag Keflavíkurflugvallar (ÍKF), was one of the founding members of the Icelandic top league in 1952 and won the first Icelandic men's championship that same year. The Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur men's basketball team, commonly known as ÍR, is the men's basketball department of Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur. It is based in Reykjavík, Iceland and was one of the pioneers of basketball in Iceland and one of the founding members of the men's Úrvalsdeild. From 1954 to 1977, the team won fifteen national championships. In 1964, it became the first Icelandic team to compete in a continental competition when it defeated the Collegians from Belfast, 71-17, in the first round of the 1964–65 FIBA European Champions Cup (now called EuroLeague). :'' Þjóðviljinn was also the name of a magazine published by Skúli Thoroddsen between 1887 and 1915.'' ''Þjóðviljinn'' () was an Icelandic daily newspaper founded on 31 October 1936. It had close ties with the Communist Party of Iceland and later its successors, the People's Unity Party – Socialist Party and the People's Alliance Party. During the occupation of Iceland in World War II, the editors of the paper, Einar Olgeirsson and Sigfús Sigurhjartarson, and journalist Sigurð Guðmundsson were arrested, accused of spreading propaganda against the British army, and moved to HM Prison Brixton in the United Kingdom for a duration of a few months. The publication of the paper was also banned for a year. In January 1992, the paper ceased publication due to financial difficulties. ''Morgunblaðið'' (, ''The Morning Paper'') is an Icelandic newspaper. ''Morgunblaðið''s website, mbl.is, is the most popular website in Iceland. History ''Morgunblaðið'' was founded by Vilhjálmur Finsen and Ólafur Björnsson, brother of Iceland's first president. The first issue, only eight pages long, was published on 2 November 1913. On 25 February 1964, the paper first printed a caricature by Sigmúnd Jóhannsson which featured the first landings on Surtsey. He became a permanent cartoonist for ''Morgunblaðið'' in 1975 and worked there until October 2008.
