1982 IAAF World Cross Country Championships – Senior Women's Race
The Senior women's race at the 1982 IAAF World Cross Country Championships was held in Rome, Italy, at the Ippodromo delle Capannelle on March 21, 1982. A report on the event was given in the Glasgow Herald. Complete results, medallists, and the results of British athletes were published. Brenda Webb (runner)
Brenda Webb is an indigenous Australian singer and actress. Her debut single "Little Black Girl" was nominated for the ARIA Award for Best Independent Release. "Little Black Girl" was released in 1993 and received radio airplay all over the country. Another song "Melting Pot" (a cover a Blue Mink song) was used by NSW Aboriginal Land Council for an anti-racism campaign. "Little Black Girl" was originally credited as being written by Webb and Wendy May Dempster but was actually written primarily by Dempster and Christopher Lloyd Bowen who took legal action soon after the song's release. The issue was settled in 1996 and Webb publicly acknowledged that she was not the main writer. Webb was pursuing an acting career before her music become successful. Galina Zakharova (russian: Галина Захарова; born 7 September 1956) is a Russian former long-distance runner who represented the Soviet Union. Her greatest success came at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships where she was the silver medallist in 1984 close behind winner Maricica Puică. She also won a team title with the Soviet women (Yelena Sipatova, Raisa Smekhnova, Tatyana Pozdnyakova) at the 1982 edition, having finished 18th. Martha "Marty" Cooksey (born July 18, 1954) is an American former long-distance runner who competed in events ranging from 5000 meters to the marathon. She achieved her marathon best time of 2:35:42 hours at the American Olympic Trials in 1984. She had her career peak in 1978, winning marathons in San Diego and Atlanta, as well as the American title with her runner-up finish at the 1978 New York City Marathon. Her times for 15 km, 20 km and half marathon were retrospectively recognised as women's world records for the road distances. Lynn Kanuka-Williams ( Kanuka; born July 11, 1960) is a Canadian athlete from Regina, Saskatchewan. She competed in 3000m races, as well as a smaller number of 1500m races. Paula Fudge
Paula Fudge (née Yeoman; born 30 March 1952) is an English former middle and long-distance runner. She won a gold medal in the 3000 metres at the 1978 Commonwealth Games, and on 13 September 1981 she set the world record for the 5000 metres with 15.14.51, the first recognised women's 5000m world record by the IAAF. This record remained the British record until 1985 when it was broken by Zola Budd. She also won a bronze medal in the 3000 metres at the 1982 European Indoor Championships.
