1982 French Open – Women's Singles
Martina Navratilova defeated Andrea Jaeger in the final, 7–6(8–6), 6–1 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1982 French Open. It was her first French Open singles title and fourth major singles title overall. Hana Mandlíková was the defending champion, but was defeated by Navratilova in the semifinals. Martina Navratilova
Martina Navratilova ( cs, Martina Navrátilová ; ; born October 18, 1956) is a Czech–American, former professional tennis player. Widely considered among the greatest tennis players of all time, Navratilova won 18 major singles titles, 31 major women's doubles titles, and 10 major mixed doubles titles, for a combined total of 59 major titles, the most in the Open Era. Isabelle Villiger (born 24 November 1962) is a Swiss former tennis player who was active during the 1980s. She reached a highest singles ranking of world number 41 in December 1981. In 1979 and 1980 she reached the semifinals of the junior singles event at Wimbledon and in 1981 competed in the Wimbledon singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. Hana Strachoňová (born 2 January 1961) is a retired professional tennis player who represented both Czechoslovakia and Switzerland. Biography Born in Brno, Strachoňová competed originally for her native Czechoslovakia. As a 17-year old in 1978 she played in two Fed Cup ties for Czechoslovakia's national team against Portugal and Indonesia. In both ties, she partnered with Hana Mandlíková in the doubles rubbers, and the pair won both matches. At the 1978 French Open, she had a win over ninth seed Renáta Tomanová to make the third round. Strachoňová reached the third round of the 1979 Wimbledon Championships. Soon after her appearance at Wimbledon, she defected to Switzerland, and in November, it was announced that she had been granted political asylum. She already had been based out of Zurich. Pilar Vásquez (born 15 May 1963) is a former professional tennis player from Peru. Biography Vásquez, who was born in Lima, moved to the United States in the late 1970s and attended school in Miami. As a junior she made the girls' singles quarter-finals at the 1980 French Open and also took part in the mixed doubles draw partnering Belus Prajoux. From 1981 she competed on the WTA Tour and in her first tournament, at Haines City, was beaten by Martina Navratilova, who she managed to take to a first set tiebreak. Laura Arraya (born 12 January 1964) is a retired Peruvian tennis player. She was also known by her married name Laura Gildemeister. Tanya Harford (born 28 November 1958) is a retired South African tennis player. In 1981 she won the doubles title at the French Open together with compatriot Rosalyn Fairbank. In the final they defeated Candy Reynolds and Paula Smith in straight sets. Lele Forood (born 10 September 1956) is the Peter and Helen Bing director of women's tennis at Stanford University. She has been the head coach since 2001, and has won 10 NCAA Championships. Previously, she was a top amateur and college tennis player. As a professional, she is best known for reaching the doubles semifinals at the 1977 US Open and at the 1978 US Open, upsetting reigning Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade.
