The discus throw (), also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disk (mathematics), disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. It is an classical antiquity, ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-BC Myron statue ''Discobolus''. Although not part of the current pentathlon, it was one of the events of the Ancient Olympic pentathlon, ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least 708 BC, and it is part of the modern decathlon. Markku Tuokko
Markku Tuokko (24 June 1951 – 20 February 2015) was a Finnish discus thrower, shot putter and teacher. At the 1978 European Championships, Tuokko won the silver medal in discus with a result of 64.90 metres. At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, he finished ninth. In Montreal 1976 he didn't make it past the qualifying round. At the 1979 European Indoor Championships, he was fourth in shot put. He won the Finnish discus throw championship five times (1977 and 1979–1982). His personal best in discus throw was 68.12 metres, achieved in May 1979 in Fresno. It remained the Finnish record until 2001, when Timo Tompuri threw 69.62 m. In shot put his personal best of 20.03 metres, which he threw in August 1979, earned him entrance in the 20 meter club. In a European Cup contest in 1977, Tuokko tested positive for doping, along with fellow Finns high jumper Asko Pesonen and javelin thrower Seppo Hovinen. Richard Charles Slaney (born 16 May 1956) is a male British discus thrower who competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics and strongman competitor, notable for being a repeat winner of the Britain's Strongest Man title. At the UK Athletics Championships he won in 1979, ranked second in 1977 to 1978, and was third in 1980. He also came third in the shot put in 1980. Biography Slaney was born in Redhill, Surrey. Sven Göran Svensson (8 March 1959 – 6 October 1995) was a Swedish discus thrower. He represented Sweden at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics. Konstantinos Georgakopoulos ( el, Κωνσταντίνος Γεωργακόπουλος; 26 December 1890 – 26 July 1973) was a Greek lawyer, politician and Prime Minister of Greece. Biography He was born in Tripoli, Greece, he studied law at the University of Athens. In 1915 he became a military court judge. In 1923 he left the military justice system with the rank of colonel. Kenth Roland Gardenkrans (born October 2, 1955, in Helsingborg, Skåne, Sweden) is a Swedish discus thrower. He represented Sweden at the 1980 Olympics. He competed for Mölndal AIK . Gardenkrans won the 1980 and 81 Swedish championship in discus. While at Brigham Young University he won the 1978 NCAA Championships and was an All American. In 1974 he set the World Junior Record, twice, ending up with 62.04. He finished second at the 1973 European Athletics Junior Championships behind future world record holder Wolfgang Schmidt. Knee injuries curtailed his later career. In 2011, he was hired as the throwing coach for Qatar. But he soon packed his bags and returned to Sweden when he learned he was expected to train Ahmed Mohammed Dheeb who was already on a 2-year doping suspension.
