1982 Detroit Lions Season
The 1982 Detroit Lions season was the 53rd season in franchise history. An NFL players strike shortened the regular season to nine games. The NFL changed the playoff format due to the strike to allow the top eight teams in each conference to qualify. Because of this, the Lions qualified for their first postseason appearance since 1970, becoming one of only four teams to ever qualify for the playoffs despite having a losing record. The Lions and the 1982 Cleveland Browns are the only two teams with a losing record to qualify as wildcards. The Lions lost to the Washington Redskins at RFK Stadium in the first round of the playoffs. It would not be until 2010 when the Seattle Seahawks became the third team with a losing record to qualify for the playoffs (7–9), the first to do so in a 16-game season and the first to win a division title with a losing record. National Football Conference
The National Football Conference (NFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the United States. The NFC and its counterpart, the American Football Conference (AFC), each contain 16 teams organized into 4 divisions. Both conferences were created as part of the 1970 NFL merger with the rival American Football League (AFL), with all ten of the former AFL teams and three NFL teams forming the AFC while the remaining thirteen NFL clubs formed the NFC. A series of league expansions and division realignments have occurred since the merger, thus making the total of 16 clubs in each conference. The 2010 NFL season was the 91st regular season of the National Football League and the 45th of the Super Bowl era. The regular season began with the NFL Kickoff game on NBC on Thursday, September 9, at the Louisiana Superdome as the New Orleans Saints, the Super Bowl XLIV champions, defeated the Minnesota Vikings. Tom Brady, quarterback of the New England Patriots, was named NFL MVP for the 2010 season. William Graham (American Football)
William Roger Graham (born September 27, 1959) is an American former American football, football player who played Safety (American football position), safety for six seasons for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL). Career Collegiate William Graham played defensive back for the Texas Longhorns football, Texas Longhorns from 1979 to 1981. In 11 games in 1980, he recorded four interceptions. In 11 games in 1981, he recorded seven more, tying the school record, leading the Southwest Conference and tied for third in the nation. His 11 career interceptions were fourth all-time at Texas. Stephen Gugel Doig (born March 28, 1960) is a former professional American football player who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Detroit Lions (1982–1984) and the New England Patriots ( 1986–1987) He was a 3rd round selection (69th overall) of the 1982 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions out of the University of New Hampshire. A cornerback (CB) is a member of the defensive backfield or secondary in gridiron football. Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and the defensive linemen.
