1980 Pacific Coast Athletic Association Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1980 Pacific Coast Athletic Association men's basketball tournament (now known as the Big West Conference men's basketball tournament) was held February 28–March 2 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. San José State topped in the championship game, 57–55, to win the Spartans' first PCAA/Big West men's basketball tournament. The Spartans, in turn, received a bid to the 1980 NCAA tournament, their second all-time. They were joined in the tournament by regular season-champions Utah State, who earned an at-large bid. Format After increasing to eight teams in 1979, the tournament field decreased back to seven. PCAA member Fresno State did not participate. With only seven teams participating, the top-seeded team was given a bye into the semifinals while the remaining six teams were entered into the first round and seeded based on regular season conference records. Anaheim Convention Center
The Anaheim Convention Center is a major convention center in Anaheim, California and is the largest exhibition facility on the West Coast of the United States. It is located across from the Disneyland Resort on Katella Avenue. The original components, designed by Adrian Wilson & Associates and built by Del E. Webb Corporation, opened in July 1967—including a basketball arena followed shortly by the convention hall. It holds many events, like Star Wars Celebration, VidCon, BlizzCon, Anime Expo, D23 Expo, WonderCon, NAMM Show, competitions, and more. The 1979–80 San Jose State Spartans men's basketball team represented San Jose State University during the 1979–80 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Spartans were led by first-year head coach Bill Berry (basketball), Bill Berry and played their home games at the San Jose Civic Auditorium. Bill Berry (basketball)
William Edward Berry (born 1942) is a retired American basketball coach. Early life and college career Berry was born in Winnemucca, Nevada and graduated from Humboldt County High School in 1960. He then attended Michigan State University. From 1961 to 1964, Berry played on the Michigan State Spartans men's basketball team under coach Forddy Anderson. At Michigan State, Berry was the top team rebounder for the 1962–63 season with 184 total rebounds and 9.2 per game. Berry earned his bachelor's degree in 1965 and master's degree in 1969 from Michigan State, both in physical education. Coaching career Berry began his coaching career in 1966 as head varsity basketball coach at Highlands High School of North Highlands, California and stayed as coach until 1969. Wallace Aliifua Rank (born March 1, 1958) is an American former professional basketball player. A 6'6" guard-forward, Rank played college basketball for San Jose State University from 1977 to 1980. He scored 1,432 points in his college career and set a school record for points in a game when he tallied 40 against California State University, Sacramento on January 3, 1980. In 1980, Rank was selected by the San Diego Clippers with the 99th pick of the 1980 NBA draft. He played 25 games for the Clippers during the 1980–81 NBA season, scoring 55 points. He later played for Sacramora Rimini in Italy and Great Taste Coffee Makers in the Philippines. The Big West men's basketball tournament (formerly the Pacific Coast Athletic Association men's basketball tournament) is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Big West Conference. It is a single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. Only the top eight teams in the conference qualify for the tournament. The winner receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship.
