1980 Davis Cup Americas Zone
The Americas Zone was one of the three regional zones of the 1980 Davis Cup. 12 teams entered the Americas Zone in total, split across the North & Central America and the South America Zones. The winner of each sub-zone advanced to the Americas Inter-Zonal Final, with the winner going on to compete in the Inter-Zonal Zone against the winners of the Eastern Zone and Europe Zone. The United States defeated Mexico in the North & Central America Zone final, and Argentina defeated Brazil in the South America Zone final. In the Americas Inter-Zonal Final Argentina defeated the United States and progressed to the Inter-Zonal Zone. The 1980 Davis Cup was the 69th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 52 teams would enter the competition, 30 in the Europe Zone, 12 in the Americas Zone, and 10 in the Eastern Zone. Carlos Claverie (born 13 January 1963) is a Venezuelan former professional tennis player. Tennis career Claverie was a regular member of Venezuela's Davis Cup team in the 1980s and his career included a 1987 win over Canadian player Glenn Michibata, who the previous year had been ranked in the world's top-50. In a 1988 tie against Jamaica he came from two sets down to win the deciding fifth rubber over Noel Rutherford, with the match going six hours. Humphrey Hose (born 4 May 1947) is a former professional tennis player from Curaçao who represented Venezuela in the Davis Cup. Biography Hose was born in Curaçao and became there the tennis champion at the age of 18. He moved to Venezuela in 1965 and began representing his adopted country in Davis Cup competition. From 1967 to 1971, Hose played collegiate tennis in the United States with the University of Corpus Christi, earning NCAA All-American selection in his final year. Alejandro Cortes (born 14 July 1955) is a former professional tennis player from Colombia. Career Cortes, who was born in Los Angeles, represented the Colombian team in Davis Cup tennis. He appeared in six ties and won eight of his 15 rubbers, six in singles and two in doubles.
