1980 Atlanta Falcons Season
The 1980 Atlanta Falcons season was the Falcons 15th season and culminated in their first division title in franchise history. After a 3-3 start, the Falcons went on a nine-game winning streak as Quarterback Steve Bartkowski passed for a career-best 3,544 yards while connecting on 31 Touchdown passes. As the NFC's top seed, the Falcons gained home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Falcons season ended with a 30-27 divisional playoff loss to the Dallas Cowboys before 60,022 fans at Fulton County Stadium. The National Football Conference - Western Division or NFC West is one of the four Division (sport), divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It currently has four members: the Arizona Cardinals, the Los Angeles Rams, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Seattle Seahawks. The division was formed in 1967 as the National Football League Coastal Division, keeping with the theme of having all of the league's divisions starting with the letter "C." The division was so named because its teams were fairly close to the coasts of the United States, although they were on opposite coasts, making for long travel between division rivals. Alpette C. Richardson (born September 23, 1957) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) who spent six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. He played college football for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. In his rookie season of 1980, Richardson set the record for most interceptions recorded by a linebacker (7), which he returned for 139 yards, while also recovering three fumbles. The Grambling State Tigers are the college football team representing the Grambling State University. Kenneth Ray Johnson (born January 7, 1958) is a former American football defensive back and return specialist who played ten seasons for the Atlanta Falcons and the Houston Oilers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Mississippi State and was drafted by the Falcons in the fifth round of the 1980 NFL Draft. College career Kenny Johnson played as a defensive back and return specialist at Mississippi State for four seasons from 1976-1979. He played in all 11 games each season. The Pacific Tigers football team represented the University of the Pacific in NCAA Division I-A (now FBS) college football. The team competed in the Big West Conference during their last season in 1995. They played their home games at Stagg Memorial Stadium in Stockton, California. On December 19, 1995, the Board of Regents voted to disband the team in order to save money for the athletic program, which was reported to have gone over $400,000 in debt.
