1979–80 Weber State Wildcats Men's Basketball Team
The 1979–80 Weber State Wildcats men's basketball team represented Weber State College during the 1979–80 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Members of the Big Sky Conference, the Wildcats were led by fifth-year head coach Neil McCarthy and played their home games on campus at Dee Events Center in Ogden, Utah. They were overall in the regular season and in conference play, won the regular season title (by four games), and the conference tournament. The sole conference loss was at Idaho, the league runner-up, which broke an winning streak and dropped Weber's poll ranking (AP, UPI) from 15 to 17. The Wildcats appeared in the first five finals of the conference tournament and this was the third consecutive title. Neil McCarthy (basketball)
Neil McCarthy (May 18, 1939 – September 18, 2021) was an American college basketball coach. He was head coach of the Weber State Wildcats team from 1974 to 1985 and at the New Mexico State Aggies from 1985 to 1997. At Weber State, McCarthy led the Wildcats to four NCAA tournaments, including the school's first NCAA Tournament win since reaching the Sweet 16 in 1972. He remained Weber State's winningest coach until Randy Rahe broke his wins record in 2016. During most of McCarthy's tenure at New Mexico State, the Aggies were the second-best team in what became the Big West Conference, behind UNLV. After UNLV hit the skids, McCarthy took advantage and led the Aggies to four straight Big West tournament titles and four straight NCAA Tournaments from 1990 to 1994. 1980 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1980 NCAA Division I basketball tournament involved 48 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 6th, 1980, and ended with the championship game on March 24th at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. A total of 48 games were played, including a national third-place game. Louisville, coached by Denny Crum, won the national title with a 59–54 victory in the final game over UCLA, coached by Larry Brown. Montana State Bobcats Men's Basketball
The Montana State Bobcats men's basketball team represents Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, United States. The school's team currently competes in the Big Sky Conference. They play their home games at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. Montana State began varsity intercollegiate competition in men's basketball in 1902. Donald David Newman (November 22, 1957 – September 11, 2018) was an American professional athlete in basketball and Canadian football. Following his playing career, he was the head basketball coach at Arizona State for the 1997–98 season, and Sacramento State from 1992 to 1997. He also was an assistant coach in the NBA with the New Jersey Nets, San Antonio Spurs, and Washington Wizards. Early life Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, Newman was a multi-sport athlete at its Brother Martin High School and graduated in 1975. Big Sky Conference Men's Basketball Player Of The Year
The Big Sky Conference Player of the Year Award, officially known as the Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Player Award, is an annual basketball award given to the Big Sky Conference's most outstanding player. The award was first given following the 1978–79 season. Only one player, Larry Krystkowiak of Montana, has won the award three times (1984–86). Three others have been two-time winners: Orlando Lightfoot of Idaho (1993, 1994) and Harold Arceneaux (1999, 2000) and Damian Lillard (2010, 2012) of Weber State. Weber State has the most all-time awards (11) and individual winners (9). Montana is second in total awards with seven; Eastern Washington is second in individual winners with six. Lamar Cardinals Men's Basketball
The Lamar Cardinals basketball team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I men's basketball competition. The Cardinals currently play in the Southland Conference following a return from the Western Athletic Conference on July 11, 2022. They were one of four programs, all from Texas, that left the Southland Conference on July 1, 2021 to join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Lamar left the Southland Conference for the second time, having initially joined at the league's formation in 1963, left in 1987, and returned in 1999. Dee Events Center is a multi-purpose indoor arena in the western United States, located on the campus of Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. The circular, 11,592-seat domed arena, similar in design to many of the era, opened in 1977 and was named for the Lawrence T. Dee family, for his extensive contributions in building the arena. Description It is the largest arena in Utah north of Salt Lake City and is home to the Weber State University Wildcats men's and women's basketball teams. The Big Sky Conference men's basketball tournament is the conference championship tournament in men's basketball for the Big Sky Conference. The event has been held annually since 1976, the conference's thirteenth year. The tournament winner earns a berth in the NCAA Division I tournament.
