1979–80 Boston Bruins Season
The 1979–80 Boston Bruins season was the Bruins' 56th season. In the first round of the NHL Draft, the Bruins drafted Ray Bourque. The Bruins had two coaches during the season. Fred Creighton had a record of 40 wins, 20 losses and 13 ties, while Harry Sinden had 6 wins and 1 loss. Offseason Don Cherry was fired after the 1978–79 season. Fred Creighton, former coach of the Atlanta Flames was brought in to coach the Bruins. Regular season General Manager Harry Sinden fired Coach Creighton with 15 days to go in the regular season despite the Bruins' winning record with Creighton. Sinden, who had coached before, took over coaching duties as well. 1980 NHL Entry Draft
The 1980 NHL Entry Draft was the 18th NHL Entry Draft. It was held at the Montreal Forum. Calder Memorial Trophy
The Calder Memorial Trophy is an annual award given "to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League (NHL)." It is named after Frank Calder, the first president of the NHL. Serving as the NHL's Rookie of the Year award, this version of the trophy has been awarded since its creation for the 1936–37 NHL season. 1979–80 NHL Season
The 1979–80 NHL season was the 63rd season of the National Hockey League. This season saw the addition of four teams from the disbanded World Hockey Association as expansion franchises. The Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, New England Whalers (later renamed "Hartford Whalers" at the insistence of the Boston Bruins), and Quebec Nordiques joined the NHL, bringing the total to 21 teams. The other two WHA teams ( Birmingham Bulls and Cincinnati Stingers) were paid to disband. The New York Islanders won their first Stanley Cup, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in six games, in the finals. The season also marked the eighth and final season for the Flames in Atlanta before the franchise relocated to Calgary. The NHL would return to the Georgia capital in 1999 with the Thrashers, but that team would ultimately relocate away from Atlanta as well becoming the second (and current) incarnation of the Winnipeg Jets. Mike Krushelnyski
Michael "Krusher" Krushelnyski (born April 27, 1960) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre/left winger who played 14 years in the National Hockey League (NHL). While playing in the NHL, he won three Stanley Cups as a player with the Edmonton Oilers and one as an Assistant Coach with the Detroit Red Wings. In a career of 897 games, Krushelnyski recorded 241 goals and 328 assists for 569 career points. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, but grew up in LaSalle, Quebec. He is the father of Lehigh Valley Phantoms ice hockey forward Alexander Krushelnyski. Marco Joseph Baron (born April 8, 1959) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender. Larry Melnyk
Larry Joseph Melnyk (born February 21, 1960) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, and Vancouver Canucks in a career that lasted from 1980 to 1990. With the Oilers he won the Stanley Cup in 1984 and 1985. Prior to turning professional Melnyk played major junior for the New Westminster Bruins of the Western Hockey League, winning the 1978 Memorial Cup with them. He was selected by Boston in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. Internationally Melnyk played for Canada at the 1979 World Junior Championship. Playing career He was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Melnyk started his National Hockey League career with the Boston Bruins in 1980. Keith Scott Crowder (born January 6, 1959) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey right winger who played ten seasons in the National Hockey League from 1980–81 until 1989–90. Playing career Crowder was drafted 57th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft.
