1978–79 Wigan Athletic F.C. Season
The 1978–79 season was the 41st season in the history of Wigan Athletic F.C. and their first as a professional club in the Football League. After finishing 2nd in the Northern Premier League during the previous season, the club was nominated to apply for Football League status, and were elected into the league to replace Southport. After a poor start, the club exceeded expectations in the league, and towards the end of the season, a second consecutive promotion seemed possible. The club eventually fell short, finishing the season in 6th place with a total of 55 points. Wigan entered the FA Cup in the first round, but were knocked out by Bury following a replay. The club also entered the League Cup for the first time, winning against Tranmere Rovers before being defeated in the second round by Luton Town. Wigan ( ) is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, on the River Douglas. The town is midway between the two cities of Manchester, to the south-east, and Liverpool, to the south-west. Ian Purdie
Ian Purdie (born 7 March 1953 in Bellshill) is a Scottish former footballer who played as a winger. He started his professional career at Aberdeen before moving on to Dundee and then Motherwell. Following a disagreement with his manager at Motherwell, Purdie moved to Wigan Athletic, and was the club's first signing after being elected into the Football League. He made his debut in the club's first ever Football League game against Hereford United, and in October 1978, he became the scorer of Wigan's first successful penalty in the Football League against Northampton Town. Purdie signed for Portsmouth in October 1979 for a fee of £20,000, but made just five appearances for the club. However, he did score the crucial 2nd goal when Portsmouth beat Northampton 2–0 on 3 May 1980 to secure promotion to Division 3. SpVgg Erkenschwick is a German football club based in Oer-Erkenschwick in North Rhine-Westphalia. History Founded as ''Sportverein Erkenschwick'' in 1916, they joined ''Emscher-Lippe-Spielverband'' to form ''Sportfreunde Erkenschwick'' in 1918, which in then merged with ''Turn- und Leichtathletikverein TV Erkenschwick'' in 1921 to form the sports club still known today as ''TuS 09 Erkenschwick''. The Football League Fourth Division was the fourth-highest division in the English football league system from the 1958–59 season until the creation of the Premier League prior to the 1992–93 season.
