1978 Pacific Coast Athletic Association Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1978 Pacific Coast Athletic Association men's basketball tournament (now known as the Big West Conference men's basketball tournament) was held March 2–4 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. Cal State Fullerton topped defending champions in the championship game, 64–53, to win its first PCAA/Big West men's basketball tournament. The Titans, in turn, received a bid to the 1978 NCAA tournament, where they advanced to the Elite Eight. It was CSUF's first Division I tournament appearance. Format The tournament field expanded again, this time increasing from six to seven teams (Fresno State participated in its first PCAA tournament). Anaheim Convention Center
The Anaheim Convention Center is a major convention center in Anaheim, California and is the largest exhibition facility on the West Coast of the United States. It is located across from the Disneyland Resort on Katella Avenue. The original components, designed by Adrian Wilson & Associates and built by Del E. Webb Corporation, opened in July 1967—including a basketball arena followed shortly by the convention hall. 1977–78 Cal State Fullerton Titans Men's Basketball Team
The 1977–78 Cal State Fullerton Titans men's basketball team represented California State University, Fullerton during the 1977–78 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Titans, led by head coach Bobby Dye, played their home games at the Titan Gym, in Fullerton, California, as members of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. They finished the season 23–9, 9–5 in PCAA play to finish in third place. In the championship game of the PCAA tournament, they defeated Long Beach State to win the tournament and receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament – the school’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Bobby Dye
Robert Lloyd Dye (born May 16, 1937) is an American former basketball coach. Early life and college years Born in Los Angeles, Dye graduated from Downey High School in nearby Downey, California in 1956. Dye enrolled at Fullerton Junior College and played on the basketball team there from 1956 to 1958. He transferred to Idaho State University and played on the Bengals basketball team from 1960 to 1962 and graduated from Idaho State in 1962. Coaching career Dye returned to the Los Angeles area after earning his degree and served as head boys' basketball coach at St. John Bosco High School of Bellflower, California from 1962 to 1965. St. John Bosco made a school-high 18–7 record in the 1963–64 season. From 1965 to 1967, Dye was an assistant coach at Cerritos Junior College. The Big West men's basketball tournament (formerly the Pacific Coast Athletic Association men's basketball tournament) is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Big West Conference. It is a single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. Only the top eight teams in the conference qualify for the tournament. The winner receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship. 1978 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1978 NCAA Division I basketball tournament involved 32 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 11, 1978, and ended with the championship game on March 27 in St. Louis, Missouri. A total of 32 games were played, including a national third-place game.
