1978 NCAA Division I-AA Football Season
The 1978 NCAA Division I-AA football season was the first season of NCAA Division I-AA, Division I-AA college football. Division I-AA was created in January 1978 when NCAA Division I, Division I was subdivided into NCAA Division I-A, Division I-A and Division I-AA for football only. It was anticipated that 65 Division I football schools would transition to Division I-AA. Instead, just eight programs (seven teams from the Southwestern Athletic Conference, which had just joined Division I a year before, plus independent Northwestern State Demons football, Northwestern State) voluntarily opted for Division I-AA for the 1978 season. They were joined by 35 schools that had reclassified from Division II. 1978 NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship Game
The 1978 NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship Game was a postseason college football game between the Florida A&M Rattlers football, Florida A&M Rattlers and the UMass Minutemen football, UMass Minutemen. The game was played on December 16, 1978, at Memorial Stadium (Wichita Falls), Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls, Texas. The culminating game of the 1978 NCAA Division I-AA football season, it was won by Florida A&M, 35–28. This was the first season of I-AA play, and the first championship game for the newly formed division. The game was also known as the Pioneer Bowl (1971-82), Pioneer Bowl, a name that had been used starting in 1971 for various NCAA playoff games held in Wichita Falls. Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC ) is a List of NCAA conferences, collegiate athletic conference whose full members are historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Southeastern United States, Southeastern and the Mid-Atlantic states, Mid-Atlantic United States. It participates in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) NCAA Division I, Division I, and in College football, football, in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). East Tennessee State Buccaneers Football
The East Tennessee State Buccaneers football program is the College football, intercollegiate American football team for East Tennessee State University (ETSU) located in Johnson City, Tennessee. The team was dormant from the end of the 2003 season until being reinstated for the 2015 East Tennessee State Buccaneers football team, 2015 season. Delaware State Hornets Football
The Delaware State Hornets football team represents Delaware State University (DSU) at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision level as a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). They play at the 7,193-seat Alumni Stadium located in Dover, Delaware. The facility opened in 1957 as a multi-purpose venue, for football and track and field. Connecticut Huskies Football
The UConn Huskies football team is a college football team that represents the University of Connecticut in the sport of American football. The team competes in NCAA Division I FBS as an NCAA Division I FBS independent schools, independent. Connecticut first fielded a team in 1896 and participated in NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Division I-AA until 1999. NCAA Division I FCS Independent Schools
NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision independent schools are four-year institutions in the United States whose football programs are not part of a football conference. This means that FCS independents are not required to schedule each other for competition as conference schools do. As of the 2024 season, Merrimack and Sacred Heart will be competing as independents, as their primary conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, does not sponsor football. NCAA Division II Independent Schools
NCAA Division II independent schools are four-year institutions that compete in college athletics at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level, but do not belong to an established college athletic conference for a particular sport. The Boston University Terriers football team was the American football team for Boston University located in Boston, Massachusetts. The school's first football team was fielded in 1884, and the program was discontinued in 1997. The Terriers football team compiled an all-time record of 323–390–34. The team competed in NCAA Division I-AA from its formation in 1978, as members of the Yankee Conference and later the Atlantic 10 Conference. Boston University terminated the varsity football program on homecoming weekend in 1997, during a one-win season in the Atlantic 10.
