1978 Men's Hockey World Cup
The 1978 Men's Hockey World Cup was the fourth Hockey World Cup men's field hockey tournament. It was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was won by Pakistan men's national field hockey team, Pakistan, who defeated the Netherlands men's national field hockey team, Netherlands 3–1 in the final. The host nation, Argentina men's national field hockey team, Argentina, finished eighth. Timotheus "Tim" Bernardus Steens (born 13 December 1955) is a retired Dutch field hockey player, who earned a total number of 162 caps, scoring 12 goals for the Netherlands national field hockey team in the 1970s and 1980s. Ronaldus "Ron" Franciscus Johannes Steens (born 18 June 1952) is a former field hockey player from The Netherlands, who was a member of the Dutch National Team that finished sixth in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. Eight years earlier the midfielder was also on the Holland squad, that ended up fourth at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Steens, a powerful midfield player who played club hockey for HC Klein Zwitserland, earned a total number of 166 caps, scoring 43 goals, in the years 1973–1985. Jan Jacob Theodoor "Theo" Doyer (December 29, 1955 – November 10, 2010) was a field hockey player from the Netherlands, who was a member of the Dutch National Team that finished sixth in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Eight years earlier he was also on the Holland squad, that ended up fourth at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Career Doyer, a forward who played club hockey for HC Bloemendaal, was born in Amsterdam and earned a total number of 182 caps, scoring 44 goals, in the years 1975–1988. In 1987 he won the European title with the Dutch squad, after beating England on penalty strokes in the finale of the 1987 Men's Hockey European Nations Cup in Moscow. André Bolhuis
Johan Henk André Bolhuis (born 4 October 1946) is a retired field hockey player from the Netherlands. He competed at the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics and finished in fourth place in both Games. He was the Olympic flag bearer for the Netherlands in 1976. In 1969, Bolhuis was selected for the national team, with which he played 128 matches and took part in four World Cups. He won four national titles between 1972 and 1976 and the World Cup in 1973. Playing the world cup final against India in 1973, he dove to stop a critical shot in extra time, allowing the team to win by penalties. His team lost the 1978 World Cup final and ended up with silver medals. He qualified for the 1980 Olympics, but did not compete because of the boycott of the Games by the Netherlands. Maarten Sikking
Martinus Jacobus Maria "Maarten" Sikking (13 February 1948 – 5 May 2009) was a field hockey goalkeeper from the Netherlands. He competed at the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics, where his team finished in fourth place on both occasions. Between 1970 and 1980 Sikking played 123 international matches. His most remarkable game was the 1973 World Cup final in Amstelveen, the Netherlands, where he stopped one penalty shot in overtime, and two more in the penalty series. As a result, Netherlands won their first international hockey title. Sikking was considered one of the best goalkeepers of his time, but never won an Olympic medal. Shahnaz Sheikh (born 21 March 1949) is a retired Pakistani field hockey player. He was born at Sialkot, Pakistan. He is related to Olympians Zahid Sheikh and Tariq Sheikh. In 2014, he was the head coach of Pakistan National Hockey Team. A forward, Shahnaz Sheikh played between 1969 and 1978.
