1978 FIFA World Cup Group B
Group B of the 1978 FIFA World Cup was one of two groups of nations competing for the ''de facto'' semi-finals of the 1978 FIFA World Cup. The group's first round of matches began on 14 June and its last matches were played on 21 June. All six group matches were played either at the Estadio Ciudad de Mendoza in Mendoza, or the Estadio Gigante de Arroyito in Rosario. The group consisted of Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Poland. Argentina advanced to the final match, and Brazil advanced to the third place match. Qualified teams The winners of Group 2 and 4 and the runners-up of Group 1 and 3 qualified for Group B of the second round. ''De facto'' ( ; , "in fact") describes practices that exist in reality, whether or not they are officially recognized by laws or other formal norms. Nicolae Rainea (19 November 1933 – 1 April 2015), nicknamed ''The Locomotive of the Carpathians'', was a Romanian football referee and player. Highly regarded throughout the world, he is considered one of the best whistles of his generation and, arguably, the finest Romanian referee of all time. Carlos Roberto de Oliveira, known as Roberto Dinamite (born 13 April 1954) is a Brazilian former footballer and politician. He was born in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro state. With a career as centre forward spanning over twenty years, Roberto is Vasco da Gama's player with the most appearances and all-time top goalscorer, as well as the overall leading scorer in the Brazilian Série A. Jorge Mendonça (footballer, Born 1954)
Jorge Pinto Mendonça (June 6, 1954 – February 17, 2006) was a Brazilian footballer during the 1970s and 1980s, playing in a striker role. Career Born in Silva Jardim, he scored 417 goals during his career (1972–1991). With Brazilian team he played 6 official games without scoring any goals (he was Zico reserve in 1978 FIFA World Cup). He won the São Paulo State Championship in 1976 and was the top goalscorer in the same tournament in 1981 - 38 goals by Guarani. After he retired he suffered of financial, healthy and familiar problems. However, in his last years, he directed a childcare project of Guarani. José Oscar Bernardi (born 20 June 1954), known as Oscar, is a Brazilian former association footballer who played as a defender. He notably represented the Brazil national football team at international level, and played as a starter in defence at the 1978 and 1982 FIFA World Cups, while he was a reserve in 1986. He was capped almost 60 times for Brazil between April 1978 and May 1986, and scored two goals. At club level, he played for São Paulo and Ponte Preta in Brazil. Oscar also played for American side New York Cosmos in 1980 and Japanese team Nissan FC between 1987 and 1989.
