1978 BC Lions Season
The 1978 BC Lions finished in fourth place in the Western Conference with a 7–7–2 record and failed to make the playoffs. A six-game mid-season losing streak, primarily to western opponents, cost the Lions a playoff spot. Quarterback Jerry Tagge had 3134 yards passing and 20 interceptions. The offence was driven by rookie running back Larry Key, who had 1054 yards rushing, 504 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns. Centre Al Wilson was selected to the CFL all-star team for the 4th consecutive season. A new uniform was introduced which included the white helmet, orange and white colour scheme and now iconic mountain lion head logo. The traditional secondary colour of black was altered to a dark brown. The uniforms would become synonymous with the powerhouse teams of the 1980s in brand new BC Place stadium. Canadian Football League West Division
The West Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League (CFL), its counterpart being the East Division (CFL), East Division. Although the CFL was not founded until 1958, the West Division and its clubs are descended from earlier leagues. The five teams in the West Division are the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Elks, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. There were also two now-defunct teams from the Canadian Football League in the United States, mid 1990s United States expansion of the CFL who played in the West Division. Al Wilson (Canadian Football)
Al "Dirt" Wilson (born April 6, 1950) is a former professional Canadian football player with the Canadian Football League BC Lions. Wilson spent his entire 15-year career with the Lions as an offensive lineman. Wilson played American college football at Montana State University. He is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame, the B.C. Lions Wall of Fame, and has a street named in his honor, "Al Wilson Grove," in his hometown of Duncan. Wilson's #52 jersey is one of eight numbers retired by the B.C. Lions. In 2003, Wilson was voted a member of the B.C. Lions All-Time Dream Team as part of the club's 50th anniversary celebration. Jim Young
James Norman Young (born June 6, 1943) is a former professional American football and Canadian football player. Young played running back and wide receiver for the NFL's Minnesota Vikings for two seasons (1965–66), and the CFL's BC Lions for thirteen seasons (1967–79). Young is a member of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, the BC Sports Hall of Fame, and the Queen's University Football Hall of Fame. Young's #30 jersey is one of ten numbers retired by the BC Lions. In 2003, Young was voted a member of the BC Lions All-Time Dream Team as part of the club’s 50th anniversary celebration. Terry Bailey
Terence Bailey (born 18 December 1947) is an English former footballer who played as a midfielder. His son Mark Bailey also played professional football. After a brief association with Winsford United, he joined Stafford Rangers in 1968. He spent six years with the club, as they finished as Cheshire County League runners-up in 1968–69, and then dominated the non-League scene of the early 1970s. His honours with the club in this period include: winners medals in the Midland Floodlight Cup, Staffordshire Senior Cup and FA Trophy; a Northern Premier League Shield runners-up medal; a Northern Premier League runners-up medal in 1970–71, and a Northern Premier League champions medal in 1971–72. John Henry White (born August 28, 1955) is a former gridiron football running back who played ten seasons in Canadian Football League for the BC Lions. Leon Bright
Leon "Pop" Bright, Jr. (born May 19, 1955 in Starke, Florida) is a former Gridiron football player in the Canadian Football League for four years and in the National Football League for five years. He played high school football at Merritt Island High School in Merritt Island, Florida and was on the 1972 Merritt Island High, Florida Class AAAA state championship team. Bright was named to the FHSAA's All-Century Team which selected the Top 33 players in the 100-year history of high school football in the state of Florida's history. He played college football at Florida State University where he still holds the record for most yards on a kickoff return, which resulted in a touchdown. Larry Key
Larry Key (born July 12, 1956) is a former Canadian Football League (CFL) running back for the British Columbia Lions from 1978 through 1982. He was an All-Star in 1979 and 1981. Key was the first Florida State Seminoles player to rush for 1,000 yards when he gained 1,117 in 1977. His 97-yard run in a 1976 game against VPI is the record for the longest run ever by a Seminole. Key also set four kick return records and was the national leader in all-purpose yardage in 1977. He was inducted into the FSU Football Hall of Fame in 1984. The 1978 Ottawa Rough Riders finished in 1st place in the Eastern Conference with a 12–4 record. In 1978, Tony Gabriel was named the Outstanding Player in the CFL. He was the first Canadian to win that honour since Russ Jackson in 1969. No other Canadian has won the award since Gabriel.
