1977–78 Port Vale F.C. Season
The 1977–78 season was Port Vale's 66th season of football in the Football League, and their eighth successive season (14th overall) in the Third Division. Finishing in 21st place, they were relegated to the Fourth Division. Roy Sproson was sacked in October after a poor start to the season, though things did not improve under his replacement Bobby Smith, despite Smith spending big money to bring in new players. Smith also left the club at the end of the season. Overview Third Division The pre-season saw manager Roy Sproson attempt to re-sign Sammy Morgan for £12,000, however, Morgan refused personal terms. Former Player of the Year David Harris also refused terms and demanded a transfer, so Terry Alcock re-joined on a month's trial to take his place. Three players arrived on free transfers: Jeff Hemmerman and Grahame McGifford from Hull City, and Bill Bentley from Blackpool. The Football League Third Division was the third tier of the English football league system in 1920–21 and again from 1958 until 1992. When the FA Premier League was formed, the division become the fourth tier level. In 2004, following the formation of the Football League Championship, the division was renamed Football League Two. Bill Bentley (footballer)
William John Bentley (born 21 October 1947) is an English former professional footballer who played as a left-back. He made a total of 439 league appearances in a 15-year career in the Football League. Beginning his career at Stoke City in 1964, he moved on to Blackpool in 1968. He spent the next nine years with Blackpool, helping them to win promotion out of the Second Division in 1969–70, and to lift the Anglo-Italian Cup in 1971. He spent 1977 to 1980 at Port Vale, also briefly serving the club as caretaker manager in 1979. He ended his career at non-League club Stafford Rangers in 1981. Grahame McGifford
Grahame Leslie McGifford (born 1 May 1955) is an English former footballer, who played at right-back for Huddersfield Town, Hull City, Port Vale and Northwich Victoria. Career McGifford started his career with Huddersfield Town in 1972. Manager Ian Greaves handed him his Second Division debut as a substitute in the 1972–73 season, after which the "Terriers" were relegated into the Third Division. He made 17 appearances in 1973–74 and 24 appearances in 1974–75, as Bobby Collins's only season in charge at Leeds Road saw the club slip into the Fourth Division for the first time. In professional association football, a free transfer, also known as a Bosman transfer, involves a professional association football club releasing a player when the player's contract has expired or made available just before the end of the contract. The player can then go on to sign for any club offering a contract to them. Terry Alcock
Terrence Alcock (born 9 December 1946) is an English former footballer. A defender, he played 330 league games in a 15-year career in the English Football League. He played for Port Vale from 1963 to 1967, before spending nine years with Blackpool following a £30,000 transfer. He helped the "Seasiders" to win promotion out of the Second Division in 1969–70, and also featured in the club's Anglo-Italian Cup success in 1971. He made 112 league appearances for Port Vale and 191 league appearances for Blackpool. After 1976 he had short spells back at Port Vale, and then Halifax Town and Lancaster City. In professional football, a transfer is the action taken whenever a player under contract moves between clubs. It refers to the transferring of a player's registration from one association football club to another. David Harris (born 19 November 1953) is an English former football defender who had a six-year professional career in the English Football League with Port Vale from 1973 to 1979. He was voted the club's Player of the Year in 1974 and 1977. He then spent two seasons with Halifax Town, before entering the non-league scene with Stafford Rangers. Sammy Morgan (footballer)
Samuel John Morgan (born 3 December 1946) is a Northern Irish former football player and coach. Moving from non-League Gorleston to Port Vale in 1970, the young forward picked up the club's Player of the Year award 1972, before winning a move to Aston Villa the following year. Villa won promotion out of the Second Division in 1974–75, though he was never a first team regular and so was sold on to Brighton & Hove Albion later in 1975. Helping Brighton to promotion out of the Third Division in 1976–77, following this success he moved on to Cambridge United. With United he won promotion out of the third tier for a second successive season, before moving on to Sparta Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
