1977 Tangerine Bowl
The 1977 Tangerine Bowl was an American college football bowl game played on December 23, 1977 at Orlando Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The game pitted the Florida State Seminoles and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Background Texas Tech started the season ranked #8 in the nation, winning their first two games of the season before a face-off with #6 Texas A&M, which they lost 33–17. Three straight wins got them to #14, but a 26–0 loss to #1 Texas dropped them out permanently. Wins over TCU and SMU followed, but they lost to Houston and #6 Arkansas to finish the season. Bobby Bowden
Robert Cleckler Bowden (; November 8, 1929 – August 8, 2021) was an American college football coach. Bowden coached the Florida State Seminoles of Florida State University (FSU) from 1976 to 2009 and is considered one of the greatest college football coaches of all time for his accomplishments with the Seminoles. During his time at Florida State, Bowden led FSU to an Associated Press and Coaches Poll National Title in 1993 and a BCS National Championship in 1999, as well as twelve Atlantic Coast Conference championships once FSU joined the conference in 1991. Bowden's Seminoles finished as an AP top-5 team for 14 consecutive seasons, setting a record which doubled the closest program. However, the program weakened during the mid-2000s, and after a difficult 2009 season Bowden was fired by President T.K. Wetherell, just weeks after his 80th birthday. The 1977 Florida State Seminoles football team represented Florida State University as an independent during the 1977 NCAA Division I football season. Led by second-year head coach Bobby Bowden, the Seminoles compiled a record of 10–2. Florida State was invited to the Tangerine Bowl, where the Seminoles defeated Texas Tech. The Citrus Bowl is an annual college football bowl game played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The bowl is operated by Florida Citrus Sports, a non-profit group that also organizes the Cheez-It Bowl and Florida Classic. Willie Jones (American Football)
Willie Lorenzo Jones (born November 22, 1957) is a former American football defensive end in the National Football League. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 1979 NFL Draft. He played college football at Florida State. Jones was inducted into the Florida State Seminoles Hall of Fame in 1988. College career Jones played college football at Florida State University from 1975 to 1978. During his career he recorded 20 sacks and was an All-American as a senior. He was the defensive MVP of the 1977 Tangerine Bowl and MVP of the 1979 Senior Bowl. Professional career Jones was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 1979 NFL Draft.
