1977 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1977 municipal election was held October 19, 1977 to elect a mayor and twelve aldermen to sit on Edmonton City Council, nine trustees to sit on the public school board, and seven trustees to sit on the separate school board. This was the first election in which a nine-member public school board was elected instead of the seven member board that had previously existed. It was also the last election to use only four wards; beginning in 1980, two aldermen were elected from each of six wards. Electoral system Mayor was elected through First past the post. Councillors were elected through Plurality block voting, three per ward, where each voter could cast up to three votes. Edmonton City Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. Municipal Elections In Edmonton

James Falconer
James Falconer (9 June 1856 – 21 April 1931) was a Scottish solicitor and Liberal Party politician. Family and education Falconer was born in Carmyllie, Forfarshire, the son of Donald Falconer. He was educated at Arbroath High School and the University of Edinburgh where he obtained his MA degree. He married Ada Kennedy. Richard Jamieson
Richard Herbert Jamieson (1912-2003) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1959 to 1963 sitting with the Social Credit caucus in government. He later served as a Public School Trustee for the Edmonton School Board from 1971 to 1983. Political career Provincial Jamieson ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature as a Social Credit candidate in the Jasper West electoral district for the 1959 Alberta general election. Due to the Edmonton electoral district being broken up due to redistribution the race was hotly contested with two incumbents. Jamieson defeated John Page and Abe Miller taking just over 40% of the popular vote to win a seat and pickup the new district for his party. Don Massey
Donald Lee Massey is a former municipal and provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1993 until 2004. In that period he also served as Leader of the Official Opposition and Leader of the Alberta Liberal Party in 2004. From 1977 until 1989 he was a Public School Trustee in Edmonton. Municipal politics Massey first ran for public office in the 1974 Edmonton municipal election. He ran for the office of Public School Trustee finishing an eighth place with 23,471 votes. Ed Ewasiuk
Edward William "Eddie" Ewasiuk (September 24, 1933 – April 14, 2006) was a labour activist, a city councilor in Edmonton, Alberta and a NDP Member of the Legislative Assembly in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Percy Wickman
Percy Dwight Wickman (June 10, 1941 – July 3, 2004) was a Canadian politician and well-known activist for people with disabilities. He was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Wickman served as an alderman on Edmonton City Council from 1977 to 1986. Bettie Hewes
Elizabeth Jane "Bettie" Hewes (March 12, 1924 – November 6, 2001) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. Hewes graduated from the University of Toronto in 1944 with a degree in occupational therapy. From 1964 to 1967, she was the executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association, and from 1967 to 1974, she was Director of the Edmonton Social Planning Council. She also served as chairman of the board of Canadian National Railway from 1984 to 1985; she was the first woman to hold that position. She served on Edmonton city council from 1974 to 1984. Ron Hayter
Ronald John Hayter (July 30, 1936 – April 21, 2018) was the longest-serving city councillor of Edmonton, Alberta, having served since 1971 until 1995, when he stepped down to join the National Parole Board. He returned to council during the 2001 civic election, was re-elected in the 2004 and 2007 civic elections, and retired in 2010. William Hawrelak
William Hawrelak (October 4, 1915 – November 7, 1975) was a politician in Alberta, Canada, the longest-serving mayor in Edmonton's history, and a candidate for election to the House of Commons of Canada. Early life Hawrelak was born in Wasel, Alberta to Ukrainian immigrants Wasel/William and Anastasia Hawrelak (the family's ancestral name was Гавриляк (''Havryliak'')). (Wasel was named after William's father.) He married Pearl Shandro (daughter of Alberta MLA Andrew Shandro, after whom Hawrelak's home district was named) the pair had three daughters. The 1980 municipal election was held October 15, 1980 to elect a mayor and twelve aldermen to sit on Edmonton City Council, nine trustees to sit on the public school board, and seven trustees to sit on the separate school board. This was the first election in which there were two aldermen elected from each of the six wards, instead of three aldermen elected from each of the four wards, as had previously been the case.
