1977 America's Cup
The 1977 America's Cup was held in September 1977 at Newport, Rhode Island. The US defender, '' Courageous'', skippered by Ted Turner, defeated the Australian challenger, ''Australia'', skippered by Noel Robins, in a four-race sweep. ''Courageous''' greatest winning margin out of all four races was 2 minutes and 23 seconds. It was the second unsuccessful challenge by Alan Bond. ''Courageous'' had beaten Lowell North's ''Enterprise'' and Ted Hood's ''Independence'' to become the defender. ''Australia'' had beaten ''France'', ''Gretel II'' and '' Sverige'' to become the challenger. This was Ted Turner's second try at a Cup, losing out at the defender trials at the 1974 Cup. New York Yacht Club
The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) is a private social club and yacht club based in New York City and Newport, Rhode Island. It was founded in 1844 by nine prominent sportsmen. The members have contributed to the sport of yachting and yacht design. As of 2001, the organization was reported to have about 3,000 members. Membership in the club is by invitation only. Its officers include a commodore, vice-commodore, rear-commodore, secretary and treasurer. The club is headquartered at the New York Yacht Club Building in New York City. The America's Cup trophy was won by members in 1851 and held by the NYYC until 1983. John Marshall (sailor)
John Knox Marshall (born April 9, 1942 in Santiago, Chile) is an American competitive sailor and Olympic medalist. He won a bronze medal in the Dragon class at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, together with Donald Cohan and Charles Horter. America's Cup In 1974 he sailed as a crew member on '' Intrepid'' during the trials, although she was not chosen to defend. In 1977, Marshall crewed for Lowell North on ''Enterprise'' although again the boat failed to be picked as the defender In 1980, Marshall was a part of the successful crew aboard ''Freedom''. As president of North’s company North Sails, Marshall was in charge of the sail inventory and the trimming of the mainsail that year. Marshall was involved in the 1983 America's Cup as a mainsheet trimmer on board ''Liberty''. Halsey Herreshoff
Halsey Chase Herreshoff (born 1933) is a naval architect of production and custom yachts, sailor and former president of Herreshoff Marine Museum. At the museum he and Edward duMoulin founded the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 1992. Halsey is son of Algernon Sidney DeWolf Herreshoff (1886–1977) and Rebecca Chase (; 1894–1991) and the grandson of the famous Nathanael Greene Herreshoff (1848–1938). As several before him in the Herreshoff family he studied Naval Architecture. At Webb Institute of Naval Architecture he finished a bachelor's degree and later a master's at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the US navy he achieved rank of Lieutenant before he started as a Naval Architect at the Bethlehem Steel Company and as a teacher at MIT. Halsey was involved in politics and was the elected chief executive officer (Town Administrator) in Bristol Town Council, Rhode Island from 1986 to 1994. Malin Burnham
Malin Burnham (born November 12, 1927, in San Diego, California) is an American sailor, real estate developer and philanthropist. Sailing At the age of 17, he won the Star World Championships in 1944 (crewing for Gerald Driscoll) and 1945 (together with Lowell North). He was involved in Dennis Conner's 1987 and 1988 Stars & Stripes America's Cup campaigns and named to the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 2002. Burnham was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2022 the position of assistant sailing coach at Stanford was endowed as the Malin Burnham Assistant Sailing Coach. Career Burnham has a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University. Gary Jobson
Gary Jobson is a sailor, television commentator and author based in Annapolis, Maryland. He is a Vice President of the International Sailing Federation. Gary has authored 19 sailing books and is Editor at Large of ''Sailing World'' and ''Cruising World'' magazines. He is President of the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Lifetime Raised in Toms River, New Jersey, Jobson graduated from Toms River High School (now Toms River High School South) in 1969 and was inducted into the school district's hall of fame in 1990. In college, at SUNY Maritime, he won the Men's Singlehanded National Championship in 1972 and 1973 and the Sloop National Championship in 1973; was an All American sailor three times; and was twice named College Sailor of the Year.
