1976–77 Brentford F.C. Season
During the 1976–77 English football season, Brentford competed in the Football League Fourth Division. After a poor start to the season, Bill Dodgin Jr. appointed to replace inexperienced manager John Docherty. With re-election looking likely, Dodgin overhauled the playing squad and the Bees won 14 of the final 18 matches of the season to complete a remarkable turnaround and finish in mid-table. Season summary After Brentford's lowest-ever finish in the Fourth Division at the end of the previous season, manager John Docherty released defenders Alan Nelmes and Keith Lawrence and replaced them with John Fraser and Bobby Goldthorpe respectively.White, p. 301-304. Brentford F
Brentford is a suburban town in West London, England and part of the London Borough of Hounslow. It lies at the confluence of the River Brent and the Thames, west of Charing Cross. Its economy has diverse company headquarters buildings which mark the start of the M4 corridor; in transport it also has two railway stations and Boston Manor Underground station on its north-west border with Hanwell. Re-election (Football League)
The Re-election system of the Football League, in use until 1986, was a process by which the worst-placed clubs in the League had to reapply for their place, while non-League clubs could apply for a place. It was the only way for a non-League side to enter the Football League until direct promotion and relegation was introduced from the 1986–87 season onwards. The clubs placed on a re-election rank at the end of a season had to face their Football League peers at the Annual General Meeting of the League. At the AGM the league members had the choice to either vote to retain the current league members, or allow entry to the League for non-League clubs which had applied. Graham Cox (footballer, Born 1959)
Graham Paul Cox (born 30 April 1959) is an English retired football who played as a goalkeeper in the Football League for Brentford and Aldershot. Career Brentford A goalkeeper, Cox joined Brentford as an apprentice during the 1975–76 pre-season. He made his debut in a 3–1 Fourth Division defeat to AFC Bournemouth on 1 January 1977. He also played in the following matches against Colchester United and Crewe Alexandra and conceded seven goals. With the team leaking goals, Crystal Palace keeper Tony Burns was brought in on loan, which ended Cox's involvement in the first team in the 1976–77 season. Cox signed his first professional contract in April 1977, but his final competitive appearance for the Bees came on 26 September 1977 in a 1–1 draw with Stockport County and he departed the club at the end of the 1978–79 season. Gary Rolph
Gary Leslie Rolph (born 24 February 1960) is an English retired footballer who played in the Football League for Brentford as a forward. Career A graduate of the Brentford youth team, Rolph made 12 appearances and scored one goal for Brentford between 1976 and 1979. His only goal for the Bees came in a 3–2 FA Cup second round defeat to Colchester United on 20 December 1976, a strike that still holds the club record for youngest goalscorer in the FA Cup. Danis Mahmut Mehmet Salman ( tr, Danış Salman; born 12 March 1960), sometimes known as Danny Salman, is a Turkish Cypriot-born English former professional footballer and coach, best remembered for his time as a defender in the Football League with Brentford. Steve Aylott
Steve Aylott (born 3 September 1951) is an English former professional footballer who played as a defensive midfielder in the Football League for Oxford United and Brentford. Playing career He was a Leyton Orient and West Ham apprentice centre-half and went to the Manor Ground on trial towards the end of 1970–71 after a visit to the Manor with the Hammers' Combination side. Keith Pritchett
Keith Bernard Pritchett (born 8 November 1953) is a Scottish former professional footballer. He played as a left back for several Football League clubs, most notably Watford, playing a part in their rise from the Fourth Division to the First Division. He finished his playing career in New Zealand, and managed the New Zealand national team from 1996 to 1997. John Fraser (born 12 July 1953) is an English former football full back who played in the Football League for Brentford and Fulham. Career Fulham After being spotted playing for his school team, Fraser entered the youth system at First Division club Fulham at the age of 14 in 1967. He began his career as a midfielder, but switched to full back under reserve team manager George Cohen and signed his first professional contract in 1971. He made his senior debut during the 1971–72 Second Division season and gradually built on his appearance record year-by-year to play 25 games during the 1974–75 season. An injury to Les Strong allowed him a place in the starting lineup for the 1975 FA Cup Final, which was lost 2–0 to West Ham United.
