The 1976 UC Davis Aggies football team represented the University of California, Davis as a member of the Far Western Conference (FWC) during the 1976 NCAA Division II football season. Led by seventh-year head coach Jim Sochor, UC Davis compiled an overall record of 8–2 with a mark of 5–0 in conference play, winning the FWC title for the sixth consecutive season. 1975 was the seventh consecutive winning season for the Aggies. The Northern California Athletic Conference (NCAC) was an NCAA Division II college athletic association that sponsored American football that was founded in 1925. It disbanded in 1998 after the majority of its member schools were forced to drop football. Rolf Joachim Benirschke (born February 7, 1955) is an American former professional football player who was a placekicker in the National Football League (NFL). He played for the San Diego Chargers from 1977 until 1986. He is probably most known for missing a potential 27-yard game-winning field goal in overtime of the playoff game known as the " Epic in Miami” but then getting a second chance and connecting from 29 yards with just 1:08 to go to win the game on January 2, 1982. Battle For The Golden Horseshoe
The Battle for the Golden Horseshoe is an annual rivalry college football game played between the UC Davis Aggies and the Cal Poly Mustangs. Although the two teams have met on the gridiron since 1939, the rivalry officially began in name with the 2004 game at Cal Poly. The winner of the game receives the Golden Horseshoe Trophy, which was also created in 2004 for the inaugural game. Due to a misunderstanding, both schools constructed a trophy for the rivalry and brought it to the inaugural game. The teams decided that the rivalry would adopt the trophy created by the winner of that game; UC Davis won 36–33 and was therefore allowed to make its trophy the official one to be exchanged in all subsequent meetings.
