Mayotte (; french: Mayotte, ; Shimaore: ''Maore'', ; Kibushi: ''Maori'', ), officially the Department of Mayotte (french: Département de Mayotte), is an overseas department and region and single territorial collectivity of France. It is located in the northern part of the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Southeastern Africa, between Northwestern Madagascar and Northeastern Mozambique. Mayotte consists of a main island, Grande-Terre (or Maore), a smaller island, Petite-Terre (or Pamanzi), as well as several islets around these two. Mayotte is the most prosperous territory in the Mozambique Channel, making it a major destination for immigration. Background

The passed a law on 31 December 1975 allowing for the independence of the Comoros without Mayotte. A referendum was subsequently organised in Mayotte for February 1976 to determine whether residents of the territory wished to remain part of the Comoros or stay under French control. France vetoed a United Nations Security Council proposal to call off the referendum.
