1975 Tampa Bay Rowdies Season
The 1975 Tampa Bay Rowdies season was the first season of the club's existence. Kit During the outdoor campaign occasionally a random Rowdies player could be seen wearing the collarless jersey used by all players during the 1975 indoor season earlier in the year, but by season's end the full-collar style that would become so familiar in all of Tampa Bay's later NASL campaigns eventually took over. Tampa Bay Rowdies (1975–93)
The Tampa Bay Rowdies are an American professional soccer team based in St. Petersburg, Florida. The club was founded in 2008 and first took the pitch in 2010. Since 2017, the Rowdies have been members of the USL Championship in the second tier of the American soccer pyramid. They formerly played in USSF Division 2 (in 2010) and the North American Soccer League (NASL) (from 2011 to 2016), which were also second-tier leagues. The Rowdies play their home games at Al Lang Stadium on St. Petersburg's downtown waterfront. The current club is a phoenix club of the original Tampa Bay Rowdies, who were active from 1975 until 1993, most notably in the original North American Soccer League. Stewart Scullion
Stewart McNab Adam Scullion (born 18 April 1946) is a Scottish former footballer, who played as a winger. Born in Bo'ness, Scotland, he started his professional career in the Football League, helping Watford to the Third Division title, and then spending three seasons at Sheffield United. After a second spell at Watford, he joined Tampa Bay Rowdies in the North American Soccer League. He was their second highest goalscorer in his first season, and in both years was named in the league's second All-star team. Scullion briefly returned to England with Wimbledon, before finishing his professional career in America with the Portland Timbers. The Soccer Bowl was the annual championship game of the North American Soccer League, which ran from 1968 to 1984. The two top teams from the playoffs faced off in the final to determine the winner of the NASL Trophy. From the league's founding in 1968 through 1974, the championship game (or series, as it was played through 1971) was known as the NASL Championship Final, and in 1984 the single game was replaced by a best-of-three series known as the Soccer Bowl Series. Florida Derby (soccer)
The Florida Derby is an American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old horses held annually at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. Since 2005, it has been run five weeks before the Kentucky Derby, which is held on the first Saturday in May. Thus the Florida Derby is currently run either at the end of March or the beginning of April. Added to the racing schedule in 1952, the Grade I race is run at miles on the dirt. The purse was increased to $1 million in 2011 but was reduced to $750,000 for 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The purse was once again increased to $1 million in 2022. NASL Final 1974 was the championship match of the 1974 season, between the expansion Los Angeles Aztecs and the Miami Toros. The match was played on August 25, 1974 at the Orange Bowl, in Miami, Florida. The teams played to a, 3–3, draw, and after a short break the game moved directly to a penalty shoot-out. Los Angeles won the shoot-out, 5–3, and were crowned the 1974 champions. Golden Goal
The golden goal or golden point is a rule used in association football, lacrosse, field hockey, and ice hockey to decide the winner of a match (typically a knock-out match) in which scores are equal at the end of normal time. It is a type of sudden death. Under this rule, the game ends when a goal or point is scored; the team that scores that goal or point during extra time is the winner. Introduced formally in 1993, though with some history before that, the rule ceased to apply to most FIFA-authorized football games in 2004. The similar silver goal supplemented the golden goal between 2002 and 2004. The golden goal used to be played in NCAA matches up to 2021 but is still used in FIH sanctioned field hockey games. Mike Hewitt (footballer)
Mike Hewitt (born 14 July 1944 in Dundee), is a Scottish retired football goalkeeper who played professionally in Scotland, Canada and the United States. After three seasons with the Scottish League's only amateur club, Queen's Park, Hewitt began his professional career with Dundee F.C. in 1970. He won his only representative honour when he was included as an overaged player in the Scotland U23 squad for the unofficial match against West Germany's Olympic XI on 10 January 1972. (He played the full 90 minutes, keeping a clean sheet in Scotland's 1–0 victory.) In 1975, Hewitt became one of the first two players, along with Alex Pringle, signed by the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League as they purchased his contract from Dundee. Tommy Ord
Tommy Ord (15 October 1952 – 15 December 2020) was an English retired professional football forward. Nearly all of his pro career was spent in North America. In 1973, Ord transferred to Montreal Olympique of the North American Soccer League. The Olympique sent Ord to the Rochester Lancers before the 1974 season. In 1975, Ord began the season with the Lancers before being traded to the New York Cosmos mid season. In 1976, the Cosmos sent him to the Vancouver Whitecaps. In 1977 they traded Ord to the Seattle Sounders toward the end of the season. Ord picked up a yellow card and scored Seattle's only goal in a 2–1 loss to the Cosmos in Soccer Bowl '77. In 1977, he was named to the Rochester Lancers Team of the Decade.
