The 1975 New Zealand Open, also known as Benson and Hedges Open for sponsorship reasons, was a professional men's tennis tournament held in Auckland, New Zealand. It was an independent event, i.e. not part of the 1975 Grand Prix or 1975 World Championship Tennis circuit. It was the eighth edition of the tournament and was played on outdoor grass courts from 6 January through 12 January 1975. First-seeded Onny Parun won the singles title. Finals Singles Onny Parun defeated Brian Fairlie 4–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–7, 6–4 * It was Parun's only title of the year and the 5th of his career. Doubles Bob Carmichael / Ray Ruffels defeated Brian Fairlie / Onny Parun 7–6, RET * It was Carmichael's only title of the year and the 10th of his career. Grass Court
A grass court is one of the four different types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Grass courts are made of grasses in different compositions depending on the tournament. Although grass courts are more traditional than other types of tennis courts, maintenance costs of grass courts are higher than those of hard courts and clay courts. Grass courts (in the absence of suitable covers) must be left for the day if rain appears, as the grass becomes very slippery when wet and will not dry for many hours. This is a disadvantage on outdoor courts compared to using hard and clay surfaces, where play can resume in 30 to 120 minutes after the end of rain. Grass courts are most common in the United Kingdom and Australia, although the Northeastern United States also has some private grass courts. The ATP Auckland Open, commonly known by its sponsored name ASB Classic, is a professional men's tennis tournament in Auckland, New Zealand. The tournament is played annually at the ASB Tennis Centre, in Parnell. It is part of the ATP World Tour 250 series of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour. The tournament is held annually in January a week before the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, the Australian Open. The Auckland Open is expected to return in 2023 after the 2021 and 2022 events were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic owing travel restrictions for international visitors to New Zealand.
