1974–75 Rangers F.C. Season
The 1974–75 season was the 95th season of competitive football by Rangers. Overview Rangers played a total of 42 competitive matches during the 1974–75 season. Rangers won the final Scottish Football League Division One title before it was rebranded as the Scottish Premier Division. They also stopped Celtic's quest for ten-in-a-row. The decisive championship match came on 29 March 1975, Rangers needed a point away to Hibernian and that's exactly what they got. The Edinburgh club finished second to Rangers with Celtic back in third, a full eleven points behind. The cup competitions however, provided little success as Rangers crashed out of the Scottish Cup in the third round to Aberdeen and could not progress past the sectional round in the League Cup. There was no competitive European football that season. However, Rangers returned to Camp Nou, Barcelona to play for the Joan Gamper Trophy. Tommy McLean
Thomas McLean Jr. (born 2 June 1947 in Larkhall) is a Scottish former professional football player and manager. McLean played for Kilmarnock, Rangers and Scotland as a midfielder. He managed Morton, Motherwell, Hearts, Raith Rovers and Dundee United. Early life McLean grew up in Ashgill, Lanarkshire, along with his elder brothers Jim and Willie, who would also become successful players and managers. Playing career A traditional tricky winger, McLean started his career at Kilmarnock, where at one point all three brothers were at the club together, Jim and Tommy as players and Willie as a coach. Midfielder
A midfielder is an outfield position in association football. Midfielders may play an exclusively defensive role, breaking up attacks, and are in that case known as defensive midfielders. Tom Forsyth
Thomas Forsyth (23 January 1949 – 14 August 2020) was a Scottish football player and coach. Forsyth played as a defender for Motherwell, Rangers and Scotland. Playing career Club Forsyth started his career at junior club Stonehouse Violet, then spent five years at Motherwell, playing over 200 times for the club before being signed by Rangers in October 1972. He scored the winning goal in the 1973 Scottish Cup Final against Old Firm rivals Celtic from six inches. During his Rangers career, Forsyth made 332 appearances in all competitions and won three league championships, four Scottish Cups and two League Cups; these successes included two domestic trebles, in 1975–76 and 1977–78. Colin Jackson (Scottish Footballer)
Colin MacDonald Jackson (8 October 1946 – 6 June 2015) was a Scottish footballer, who played predominantly for Rangers and the Scotland national team. Career Jackson, a defender, initially joined Rangers straight from Ruthrieston School in 1962. He had a spell with Aberdeen side Sunnybank Athletic before rejoining the ''Light Blues'' in 1963. He made a total of 506 appearances for Rangers between 1963 and 1982 and during his time at Ibrox won 3 League championships, 3 Scottish Cups and 5 League Cups. In the 1978–79 Scottish League Cup Final, he scored a last-minute winning goal. Perhaps the biggest disappointment during his career came when he missed out on Rangers' victory in the 1972 European Cup Winners' Cup Final, having failed a fitness test prior to the game against Moscow Dynamo. Derek Johnstone
Derek Joseph Johnstone (born 4 November 1953) is a Scottish former football player and manager. Johnstone played mainly for Rangers winning 14 major trophies during his career. He also had a spell at Chelsea and a brief stint in management with Partick Thistle. He mainly played as a striker but could also perform in central defence, and in midfield. Uniquely, he was selected to play in defence, midfield, and attack for Scotland. Playing career Club Rangers Johnstone signed for Rangers as a schoolboy in 1968. Alex Miller
Alex Miller (born 4 July 1949) is a Scottish football manager and former player. As a player, he had a 15-year career with Rangers, winning several trophies. As a manager, he won the 1991–92 Scottish League Cup with Hibernian. He subsequently worked for Premier League club Liverpool for nine years, assisting Gérard Houllier and Rafael Benítez. Playing career Miller started his playing career with Clydebank Strollers before he made the move to Rangers. He played for Rangers from 1967 until 1982 and made 309 appearances during his spell at Ibrox, scoring 33 goals. Sandy Jardine
William "Sandy" Pullar Jardine (31 December 1948 – 24 April 2014) was a Scottish professional footballer who played for Rangers, Hearts and represented Scotland. He played over 1000 professional games and twice won the Scottish Football Writers Association Player of the Year award. He won several honours with Rangers, including two domestic trebles in 1976 and 1978, and was part of the Rangers team that won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972. He won 38 caps for Scotland and played in the 1974 and 1978 World Cups. Jardine was also co-manager of Hearts with Alex MacDonald and later worked for Rangers. Stewart Kennedy
Stewart Kennedy (born 31 August 1949 in Stirling) is a Scottish former professional football goalkeeper, who played for Stenhousemuir, Rangers, Forfar Athletic and St Johnstone. Kennedy played in five full international matches for Scotland, all in 1975. Career Kennedy joined Dunfermline Athletic as an 18-year-old in 1967 from local junior side Camelon, before returning to junior football in 1969 with Linlithgow Rose. Two years later he returned to the senior game, signing for Stenhousemuir. It was from here, after another two-year stint, he was signed by Rangers for £10,000. He mainly served as back-up for their established goalkeeper Peter McCloy.
