The League of Ireland ( ga, Sraith na hÉireann), together with the Football Association of Ireland, is one of the two main governing bodies responsible for organising association football in the Republic of Ireland. The term was originally used to refer to a single division league. However today the League of Ireland features five divisions – the Premier Division, the First Division, U19 Division, U17 Division, U15 Division and starting U13 Division. The League of Ireland has always worked closely with the FAI and in 2006 the two bodies formally merged. All the divisions are currently sponsored by Airtricity and as a result the league is also known as the SSE Airtricity League. Bobby Tambling
Robert Victor Tambling (born 18 September 1941) is an English former professional footballer, who played as a forward, most notably for Chelsea, Crystal Palace and England. He was Chelsea's all-time top scorer for 47 years, with 202 goals in all competitions until Frank Lampard surpassed this total on 11 May 2013. Tambling remains Chelsea's all-time top scorer in league competition with 164 goals. After enjoying a successful career in the Football League during the 1960s and early 1970s, Tambling moved to Ireland. He subsequently played for several clubs in the League of Ireland and also represented the League of Ireland XI. Noel Mitten (born 5 January 1957) was an Irish footballer during the 1970s. He won a league winners medal with Bohemians in 1974–75 and was Bohemian's top scorer that season with 8 goals in 16 league games. Mitten scored in the 1974–75 League Cup final against Finn Harps and also netted in the replay. He made five appearances in European competition for Bohemians scoring in the 1976-77 European Cup Winners' Cup at Esbjerg fB. A former Manchester United trainee from 1972 to 1973, he later emigrated to Australia. Mitten's clubs in Australia included Frankston City, Essendon Croatia, Morwell Falcons, Maribyrnong Polonia and Sunshine George Cross FC. For several years Mitten was head football (soccer) coach at Wesley College, Melbourne. Paul Edgar Philippe Martin (born August 28, 1938), also known as Paul Martin Jr., is a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the 21st prime minister of Canada and the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada from 2003 to 2006. Johnny Matthews (27 August 1946 – 25 December 2019) was an English footballer and manager. Matthews started his career playing with his home club Coventry City. He moved to Waterford United during the 1965/66 season on St. Patrick's Day under the impression from Jimmy Hill that it was for just a six-week loan period. Matthews played in the last seven games scoring twice and his loan period was extended. During the following season he signed for the club on a permanent basis. In the next 13 seasons Matthews became a legend at Kilcohan Park.
