Television In Ireland
Television in the Republic of Ireland is available through a variety of platforms. The digital terrestrial television service is known as Saorview and is the primary source of broadcast television since analogue transmissions ended on 24 October 2012. Digital satellite (from Sky Ireland, Saorsat and other European satellite service providers are available) and digital cable (from Virgin Media Ireland) are also widely used. The Irish satellite fill-in service (Saorsat) is via Ka-Sat using the Irish KA band spot and has been available since June 2011. While many people receive their television via Saorview, which is broadcast by 2RN, more than half subscribe to multichannel television networks. The biggest single multichannel television network in Ireland is Sky Ireland, which broadcasts digital satellite television services. ''7 Days'' (previously ''Seven Days'') is an Irish current affairs television programme presented by Brian Farrell, Brian Cleeve and John O'Donoghue which was broadcast on RTÉ One from 1966 until 1976. History Background ''Seven Days'' was created by RTÉ One as a replacement for the existing programme '' Sixty Six''. It was developed at a time when the station was expanding its current affairs programming. Victoria Smurfit (born 31 March 1974) is an Irish actress. She is known for playing Orla O'Connell in the BBC television series ''Ballykissangel'', Detective Chief Inspector Roisin Connor in the ITV police procedural ''Trial & Retribution'' and Cruella de Vil in ''Once Upon a Time'' for which she was nominated as Best Supporting Actress in 13th IFTA Film & Drama Awards in 2016. Early life Victoria Smurfit is part of the Smurfit family which, through Smurfit Kappa, is one of the richest in Ireland. The family, headed by Victoria's uncle Michael Smurfit, sponsors a number of sporting events including the Smurfit European Open and the Champion Hurdle. Keith Duffy
Keith Peter Thomas Francis Julian John Duffy (born 1 October 1974) is an Irish singer, actor, radio and television presenter and drummer who began his professional music career as part of Irish boy band Boyzone alongside Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham, Shane Lynch and Stephen Gately in 1993. The band decided to focus on solo projects in 2000 since which Duffy has achieved critical acclaim for his acting roles, particularly in soap operas such as ''Coronation Street'' and ''Fair City''. He has also presented '' The Box'' and ''You're a Star''. Duffy has been an autism "awareness" campaigner since his daughter was diagnosed with the condition at age 18 months, and acts as the patron for Irish Autism Action holding regular fundraising events and informational talks. Lorraine Pilkington (born 18 April 1974) is an Irish actress from Dublin who is best known for her role as Katrina Finlay from '' Monarch of the Glen''. Life Born in Dublin, Pilkington grew up in the affluent suburban village of Malahide, and attended Manor House School, Raheny. Trained at the Gaiety School of Acting, Pilkington began her career at the age of 15 when she appeared in '' The Miracle'' directed by Neil Jordan. ''Hall's Pictorial Weekly'' was an Irish satirical television series broadcast on Raidió Teilifís Éireann from 1971 to 1980. Regarded as RTÉ's flagship comedy show, it featured satirical sketches on current news stories, politics and popular culture, as well as parody songs, comedy sketches, re-edited videos, cartoons and spoof television formats. The show was written, presented and edited by Frank Hall and featured a cast including Frank Kelly and Eamon Morrissey. History Development ''Hall's Pictorial Weekly'' had its origins in the daily regional news magazine ''Newsbeat'', which ran between 1964 and 1971. The programme was noted for concentrating on colourful characters and off-beat reportage, as well as occasional comedy sketches. Wanderly Wagon
''Wanderly Wagon'' is an Irish children's television series which aired on RTÉ from Saturday 30 September 1967Hourihane, Anne Marie''Sunday Tribune'' 11 August 2002. until 1982. Plot ''Wanderly Wagon'' followed human and puppet characters as they travelled around Ireland visiting interesting locations, rescuing Princesses and generally doing good. The original premise of the show expanded to follow the characters to magical lands of Irish mythology, and into outer space. The Wagon could fly, and using chroma key effects, the Wagon was shown hovering in mid-air, landing in various magical lands, and even traveling underwater. Quicksilver (Irish TV Show)
''Quicksilver'' was a television quiz show produced and broadcast in Ireland by RTÉ and hosted by Bunny Carr from 1965 to 1981. The show was broadcast each week from a different Irish town, with a live audience. Competitors were selected from the audience by drawing numbered tickets, prompting many amusing exchanges as they competed for small monetary prizes by answering a series of trivia questions. Musical accompaniment was provided by organist Norman Metcalfe, who frequently provided musical hints to the answers. The centre-piece was a large board with 30 illuminated numbers that indicated remaining prizes. After the host read the question, the lights went out one-by-one (approximately one each second) until either the contestant gave the correct answer or seven lights went out. Broadcasting Review Committee
Broadcasting is the distribution of audio or video content to a dispersed audience via any electronic mass communications medium, but typically one using the electromagnetic spectrum (radio waves), in a one-to-many model. Broadcasting began with AM radio, which came into popular use around 1920 with the spread of vacuum tube radio transmitters and receivers. Before this, all forms of electronic communication (early radio, telephone, and telegraph) were one-to-one, with the message intended for a single recipient. The Riordans
''The Riordans'' was the second Irish television drama serial made by Raidio Telefís Éireann (then called ''Telefís Éireann''). It ran from 1965 to 1979 and was set in the fictional townland of Leestown in County Kilkenny. Its location filming with Outside Broadcast Units, rather than using only TV studios, broke the mould of broadcasting in the soap opera genre and inspired the creation of its British equivalent, ''Emmerdale Farm'' (now called ''Emmerdale'') by Yorkshire Television in 1972.
