1974 US Open – Women's Singles
Billie Jean King defeated Evonne Goolagong in the final, 3–6, 6–3, 7–5 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1974 US Open. Goolagong was attempting to complete the career Grand Slam. Margaret Court was the reigning champion, but did not compete this year. Chris Evert held a 55-match winning streak before being defeated by Goolagong in the semifinals. This was an Open Era record streak length until 1984, when it was surpassed by Martina Navratilova. Billie Jean King
Billie Jean King (née Moffitt; born November 22, 1943) is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. King won 39 major titles: 12 in singles, 16 in women's doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles. King was a member of the victorious United States team in seven Federation Cups and nine Wightman Cups. For three years, she was the U.S. captain in the Federation Cup. King is an advocate of gender equality and has long been a pioneer for equality and social justice. A lucky loser is a sports competitor (player or team) who loses a match in a knockout tournament or loses in qualifying, but who then enters the main draw, usually when another competitor withdraws during the tournament because of illness, injury, or other reasons. Robin Tenney Archibald (born May 13, 1958) is an American former professional tennis player. Biography Born in New York, Tenney is the youngster of three sisters. Her middle sister, Laurie, also competed on the professional tour. The eldest of the three sisters, Susan, was the first to take up the sport but didn't play beyond amateur tournaments. Their father, who was a real estate financier, relocated the family to California when she was 11 years of age and she attended Rexford School in Beverly Hills. Pam Teeguarden (born April 17, 1951) is a former American professional tennis player in the 1970s and 1980s, ranked in the top 20 from 1970–1975. She won two Grand Slam Doubles Titles and was a quarter finalist in singles at the U.S. Open and The French Open.
