1974 Small College Football Rankings
The 1974 NCAA College Division football rankings are from the United Press International poll of College Division head coaches and from the Associated Press poll of sportswriters and broadcasters. The 1974 NCAA Division II football season was the 17th year UPI published a Coaches Poll and it was the 15th year for the Associated Press. Both polls used the term "College Division" in 1974, but many of the referenced publications continued to use the "Small College" terminology. The final UPI poll was released before the Division II playoffs, and the final AP poll was released after the playoffs. The following season would be the last year AP & UPI would publish College Division / Small College rankings. The 1974 Lehigh Engineers football team was an American football team that represented Lehigh University as an independent during the 1974 NCAA Division II football season. In their tenth year under head coach Fred Dunlap, the Engineers compiled a 7–3 record. Jim Addonizio and Joe Alleva were the team captains. The 1974 Texas Lutheran Bulldogs football team was an American football team that represented Texas Lutheran College (later renamed Texas Lutheran University) and won the national championship during the 1974 NAIA Division II football season. In their fourth season under head coach Jim Wacker, the Bulldogs compiled a perfect 11–0 record and outscored opponents by a total of 421 to 44. They participated in the NAIA Division II playoffs, defeating (52–8) in the semifinals and (42–0) in the NAIA Division II Championship Game. The 1974 Central Michigan Chippewas football team was an American football team that represented Central Michigan University as an independent during the 1974 NCAA Division II football season. In their eighth season under head coach Roy Kramer, the Chippewas compiled a 12–1 record, losing the opening game to Kent State and then winning 12 straight games. In postseason play, they defeated Boise State 20–6 at Perry Shorts Stadium in a Division II quarterfinal, Louisiana Tech in the Pioneer Bowl (semifinal) in Texas, and Delaware in the Camellia Bowl to win the Division II championship.
