1974 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 7 December 1974 to elect the 82 members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The National-Liberal Coalition won a third consecutive victory under Joh Bjelke-Petersen, and the seventh consecutive victory for the National Party in Queensland, which had renamed itself from the Country Party since the previous election. The Labor Party lost two-thirds of its seats, including that of leader Perc Tucker—its worst showing in an election until 2012. Labor was reduced to only 11 seats, leading observers to call Labor's caucus a "cricket team." Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). The governor of Queensland is the representative in the state of Queensland of the monarch of Australia. David Byrne (Australian Politician)
David Edward Byrne (born 20 January 1952) is an Australian activist and politician. A former Augustinian monk and Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, he later moved to Cape York, became an advocate for Aboriginal land rights and co-founded the Cape York Land Council with Noel Pearson. Byrne was born in Sydney and was educated at St Martin's Catholic Primary School and Villanova College in Brisbane. He initially entered the Augustinian seminary and became a monk for five years, but later studied teaching at the University of Queensland. A member of the state executive of the Young Liberals, he was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly at the 1974 state election amidst the National-Liberal landslide of that year. Fred Newton (politician)
Harold Francis "Fred" Newton (12 July 1921 – 28 December 1990) was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early Days Newton was born in Maryborough to Francis and Ada Laura Newton (née Davey). Due to family financial pressures Harold and his sister Ada were made wards of the state and sent to an orphanage in Nudgee, Brisbane for three years. As state wards were deemed to owe a debt to the state Newton was sent work on a dairy farm in Pittsworth. This farm was eventually sold and he was relocated to a farm in Maryvale. When he turned 18 he returned to his family in Maryborough. In 1946, Newton was working in a bacon factory when due to a strike he left his job and became a builder's labourer. This led to a long association with the Building Workers' Industrial Union and he served the role of state organiser from 1953 till 1960. Martin James Tenni (4 April 1934 – 20 October 2019) was an Australian politician. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Martin Tenni was born on 4 April 1934 in Cairns, the son of Henry Tenni and Francis May, ''née'' Reed. Bill Wood (politician)
Bill Wood (born 4 November 1935) is an Australian politician who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland and later the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly. He was elected to the Queensland Parliament as the Labor member for Cook in 1969, transferring in 1972 to the new seat of Barron River. He was defeated in 1974 by Country Party candidate Martin Tenni. Barron River is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. Created at the 1971 redistribution, it currently covers the northern suburbs of Cairns, as well as Kuranda. The Barron River from which the electorate derives its name runs through its centre. Dennis Charles Young (born 7 August 1947) is an Australian politician and a harm reduction campaigner. He was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1974 to 1977, representing the electorate of Baroona. He has been the national executive director of harm reduction organisation Drug Arm since 1988. Early life Young was born in Brisbane, and was educated at Kelvin Grove State School and Kelvin Grove State High School. Patrick Joseph "Pat" Hanlon (19 March 1930 – 30 October 2014) was an Australian politician. Electoral District Of Baroona
Baroona was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1935 to 1977. It mostly covered the inner western suburbs of Brisbane. It was mostly a safe seat for the Labor Party, but was won by the Liberal Party in the 1974 election. It was abolished in the redistribution before the 1977 election, and its territory divided between the districts of Brisbane Central, Ithaca and Ashgrove.
