1974 Christchurch Mayoral Election
The 1974 Christchurch mayoral election was part of the New Zealand local elections held that same year. In 1974, election were held for the Mayor of Christchurch plus other local government positions. The polling was conducted using the standard first-past-the-post electoral method. A significant change was the introduction of a ward system, with city councillors elected in five wards. Background Sitting mayor Neville Pickering was defeated by Citizens' councillor Hamish Hay in a closely fought race with a large turnout. Pickering actually increased his poll but the increased voter turnout favoured Hay leading ''The Press'' to state the result was out of increased interest rather than a swing of public opinion. It was the second consecutive election that an incumbent mayor had been defeated. Christchurch City Council
The Christchurch City Council is the local government authority for Christchurch in New Zealand. It is a territorial authority elected to represent the people of Christchurch. Since October 2022, the Mayor of Christchurch is Phil Mauger, who succeeded after the retirement of Lianne Dalziel. The council currently consists of 16 councillors elected from sixteen wards, and is presided over by the mayor, who is elected at large. Albert Orme
Albert Frederick Orme (27 March 1937 – 27 November 2008) was a New Zealand rugby player, lawyer and politician. Biography Orme was born in 1937 in Rotorua. As a teenager he was sent to board at Waitaki Boys' High School in Oamaru, where he was the only Māori student at the school. He starred in Waitaki Boys' first XV rugby team plating in the backline. While studying law at University of Canterbury he played in the university team as a first-five. He played provincial rugby for Canterbury from 1959 to 1962. He was selected for the New Zealand Māori team to play against France in their 1961 tour and later toured North America with the New Zealand Universities XV in 1962. While at university he was elected president of the University of Canterbury Students' Association. After he graduated in 1967 he worked for the Public Trust Office in Christchurch. Maurice Carter (developer)
Maurice Rhodes Carter (1 July 1917 – 9 May 2011) was a New Zealand property developer, philanthropist and local politician. Biography Carter was born on 1 July 1917 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. He spent much of his youth in Kettlewell, and Kettlewell Lane in the Christchurch Central City is named after him. He was apprenticed as a carpenter and in 1936, he went with friends on an overseas experience to Argentina where they worked on a plantation. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1938. Although he enlisted for service in World War II, he did not go overseas as the army got him to work on army facilities in Burnham and Weedons. In 1946, he founded his construction company that he named The Carter Group. The company built many of the houses in the Christchurch suburbs of Bryndwr and Burnside and at the peak, the company built 100 houses per year. David Francis Caygill (born 15 November 1948) is a former New Zealand politician. Caygill was born and raised in Christchurch. He entered politics in 1971 as Christchurch's youngest city councillor at the age of 22. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1978 New Zealand general election, 1978 to 1996 New Zealand general election, 1996, representing the New Zealand Labour Party, Labour Party. Robert Macfarlane (New Zealand Politician)
Sir Robert Mafeking Macfarlane (né Haynes, 17 May 1900 – 2 December 1981) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. He was a Member of Parliament, served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and was a Mayor of Christchurch. Early life Macfarlane was born in Christchurch on 17 May 1900, the son of Emma Rose King Haynes. Born during the Second Boer War, his mother gave him the middle name Mafeking from a town in South Africa that was under siege at the time of his birth. Peter Skellerup
Peter Jensen Reid Skellerup (also Skjellerup, 14 January 1918 – 15 May 2006) was a New Zealand industrialist and philanthropist. Early life Skellerup was born in Christchurch in 1918. His father was George Skellerup (1881–1955), the founder of rubber manufacturing company Skellerup Industries. His mother was Elizabeth, née Reid. His father was born in Australia but the family stemmed from Denmark, with his father's birth name including a silent "j" that he dropped from the name at some point. Vicki Buck
Vicki Susan Buck (born 16 July 1955) is a New Zealand politician. She was Mayor of Christchurch for nine years from 1989 to 1998. She retired after three terms, having been very popular. She made a political comeback, standing in the 2013 local elections in the Riccarton-Wigram ward as councillor for Christchurch City Council, being returned with the highest number of votes across all city wards. Mary Dorothy Batchelor (née Foley, 7 January 1927 – 12 March 2009) was a New Zealand trade unionist, feminist and Labour Party politician. Biography Early life and career Batchelor was born in Christchurch in 1927, the elder of two daughters, to parents from the West Coast. She attended St Mary's College until she left at 13 to begin work. She began training as a hat maker, but depreciating eyesight forced her to leave the trade.
