The 1974 CCHA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the third CCHA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament. It was played between March 8 and March 10, 1974, at St. Louis Arena in St. Louis, Missouri. Saint Louis won the tournament, defeating Lake Superior State 8–3 in the championship game. 1973–74 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 1973–74 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season began in October 1973 and concluded with the 1974 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament's championship game on March 16, 1974 at the Boston Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. This was the 27th season in which an NCAA ice hockey championship was held and is the 80th year overall where an NCAA school fielded a team. In the summer of 1973 the NCAA changed the classifications of the tiers in each of their sponsored sports. The University- and College-divisions were done away with and replaced by numerical designations making this the first official Division I season. The NIT held a competing ice hockey tournament for the first time. Central Collegiate Hockey Association
The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) is a college athletic conference that participates in the NCAA's Division I as a hockey-only conference. The current CCHA began play in the 2021–22 season; a previous incarnation, which the current CCHA recognizes as part of its history, existed from 1971 to 2013. Half of its members are located in the state of Michigan, with additional members in Minnesota and Ohio. It has also had teams located in Alaska, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Nebraska over the course of its existence. Saint Louis Billikens Men's Ice Hockey
The Saint Louis Billikens men's ice hockey is an ACHA Division II ice hockey team that plays in the Gold Division (D-II) of the Mid-American Collegiate Hockey Association. History Division I Saint Louis University began sponsoring ice hockey as a Division I sport in 1970, partly to capitalize on the new NHL team, the St. Louis Blues, that had begun playing only three years earlier. The Billikens were able to reach an agreement with Blues owner Sid Salomon Jr. to play their home games at the newly renovated St. Louis Arena, giving Saint Louis by far the largest home venue in the college ranks. Additionally the Billikens were able to secure the services of Bill Selman as head coach. Selman had spent the preceding six years behind the bench for Minnesota–Duluth and North Dakota, helping the Fighting Sioux to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament in the mid-1960s. Bill Selman
William G. Selman (born c. 1939) is a retired head coach of men's college, university and professional ice hockey teams. Career Bill Selman was a three year letterman for the North Dakota Fighting Sioux men's ice hockey, North Dakota Fighting Sioux, winning a List of NCAA Division I men's ice hockey tournament champions, national title with the team in his senior season. After two seasons as an assistant in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Grand Forks Selman became the third consecutive assistant coach to be promoted to head coach of the Sioux in 1966. Selman led North Dakota to two conference tournament titles in each of his first two seasons, finishing as runners up in 1968 NCAA University Division men's ice hockey tournament, 1968. CCHA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament
The CCHA Tournament is the conference tournament for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), an NCAA Division I men's ice hockey conference that originally operated from 1971 to 2013 and has been revived effective in 2021. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the tournament also receives the Mason Cup, which was first presented in 2001. In other years, the trophy was known as the CCHA Tournament Championship Trophy. The tournament was first held in 1972, the first year of conference play. List Of CCHA All-Tournament Teams
The CCHA All-Tournament Team was an honor bestowed at the conclusion of the NCAA Division I Central Collegiate Hockey Association conference tournament to the players judged to have performed the best during the championship. The team was composed of three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender with additional players named in the event of a tie. Voting for the honor was conducted by the head coaches of each member team once the tournament has completed and any player regardless of their team's finish is eligible. The All-Tournament Team began being awarded after the first championship in 1972 and continued for four seasons before being discontinued after 1975. Mario Faubert (born December 2, 1954) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey defenceman and politician. Hockey career Faubert played two seasons at Saint Louis University before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1974 NHL amateur draft. His early career was split between the Penguins and the AHL's Hershey Bears. He played his first full season in 1981, and finished the year first among Pittsburgh defenceman in scoring.
