The 1974 African Cup of Nations Final was an association football match between Zaire national football team, Zaire and Zambia national football team, Zambia at the Nasser Stadium in Cairo to determine the winner of the 1974 African Cup of Nations, the ninth edition of the African Cup of Nations. The final was drawn 2–2 on 12 March 1974, before Zaire won the replay 2–0 two days later. 1974 African Cup Of Nations
The 1974 African Cup of Nations was the ninth edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the soccer championship of Africa ( CAF). It was hosted by Egypt. Just like in 1972, the field of eight teams was split into two groups of four. Zaire won its second championship (their first win came as Congo-Kinshasa), tying Zambia 2−2 in the final and beating them 2−0 in the replay. Zaire went on to compete in the World Cup later that year. The Africa Cup of Nations is a football competition established in 1957. It is contested by the men's national teams of members of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the African governing body for the sport, and is held every two years. The winner of the first final was Egypt, who defeated Ethiopia 4–0 in Khartoum, after extra time. The last final hosted in Abidjan in 2024 was won by the Ivory Coast, defeating Nigeria 2–1. The Africa Cup of Nations final is the last match of the competition, and the result determines which team will be declared African champion. Pierre Ndaye Mulamba (4 November 1948 – 26 January 2019) was a football midfielder from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire. He was nicknamed "Mutumbula" ("assassin") and "Volvo". Football career Mulamba was born in Luluabourg (now Kananga) in 1948. In 1973, he starred for AS Vita Club of Kinshasa, who won the African Cup of Champions Clubs. He was a second-half substitute for the Zaire national team against Morocco in the decisive match in qualification for the 1974 World Cup. In 1974 Mulamba played for Zaire in both the African Cup of Nations in Egypt and the World Cup in West Germany. In Egypt he scored nine goals, still a record, as Zaire won the tournament.
